Description

Set in the charming town of Clare, this delightful wing of a Grade I property makes a wonderful base for a couple touring Suffolk.

Awash with original character, and dating back to the 15th century, this Grade I listed property will surround you with elegance and beauty, and a few touches from the owner that will surely please. Cliftons Cottage forms the west wing of the owner’s home, offering complete privacy and its own enclosed garden with a patio seating area. It is packed with style and charm and incorporates touches of luxury including an emperor sized bed and heritage style bathroom with quality linen and towels, fine English toiletries, and welcome pack, together with complimentary port served from the decanter. Guests arriving at Christmas will find Cliftons Cottage decorated for the season. It lies in the beautiful setting of Clare, an award-winning town, packed with historical places of interest to visit, including lovely old houses dating back to the Tudor, Georgian and Victorian periods, as well as shops, antique outlets, art galleries, bistro pubs and cafés all within a few minutes walk. The town has historical gems including a 13th-century Augustinian priory, as well as Clare Country Park, a medieval church, and Ancient House Museum, known to be one of the oldest houses - notable for its splendid pargetting (decorative plaster moulding). Visit the ruins of Clare Castle, dating back to William the Conqueror, and follow the spiral path which leads to the castles keep, where a beautiful view of historic Clare can be seen. There is freshwater fishing and good walking from the doorstep - you can enjoy Clare Walk, an easy 3½-mile circular walk through the countryside around Clare or a round of golf at Clare’s 9 hole course.
Close by are the towns of Long Melford, 8 miles away, known for the longest tree lined high street in the country, with its numerous art and antique outlets, many fine dining restaurants and stately halls. The jewel of Suffolk, Lavenham is a mere 14 miles away, and is regarded as one of the most beautiful and best preserved medieval villages in the UK. Worth a visit is the Suffolk heritage coastline, and take in Southwold, 68 miles, Aldeburgh and Orford where there is something for everyone whilst Bury St Edmunds, 17 miles, is an important market town with a richly fascinating heritage. Its striking combination of medieval architecture, elegant Georgian squares and glorious cathedral and abbey gardens provide a distinctive visual charm. Cambridge, 26 miles, has museums, art galleries, quaint passages set around the historic market place, beautiful buildings, majestic college buildings, shopping, and punting along the River Cam. Shops, pubs and restaurants ¼ mile.

Only a weekend break but very restful and relaxing. The location of this cottage in Clare itself meant that there was plenty to do without using the car. The cottage was very well presented and well equipped.

We feel deeply privileged to have had the opportunity to stay at Clifton's Cottage, for it is the wing of one of Clare's most beautiful and historic merchant houses. The owners have ensured an exceptional standard of quality accommodation throughout and obviously have given great thought to carefully consider the needs for their guests. We would have absolutely no hesitation to recommend Clifton's Cottage. It's location is perfectly suited to visit all the charming towns and village within a very short distance from Clare.

Had a week away in October. The cottage was large for two and very comfortable. Clare is a great base to explore with a great butchers and some nice pubs. High point for us was great walking straight out of the front door with seven circuits starting from the country park.
