Very strong smell of dogs and property felt damp. Access up to the property is very difficult. Fortunately we had a 4 wheel drive car but the drive up was still very scary. We arrived in the dark due to traffic delays and one of my granddaughters suffered a panic attack on the way up to the property, which was not a good start to our holiday. Although your details mentioned the 180 deg turns it was not made clear that these were on a single track, extremely steep climb, and on the edge oF a sheer drop! We will not be visiting this property again , although Lynmouth itself was a lovely place to stay.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your recent comments made regarding Cheswood. We welcome feedback and attempt to remedy any concerns raised. We have always welcomed well behaved dogs but due to recent feedback from some of our guests saying they found the property smelling of dogs, we have taken the following action. As from today we have decided to no longer accept dogs. We will of course honour any bookings already taken. We have also decided to take some action regarding the comments made about the steep drop at the top of the driveway. We can understand that this may be of concern to some of our guests who are not familiar with the road. As such fence posts and railings will be erected as soon as possible. This should then give some confidence to our guests when arriving at Cheswood.

We did not stop in the cottage due to the over powering smell of dogs in the living areas, the bedrooms were ok with the windows open, which is why I marked the cleanliness as a five as every where had been dusted and vaccumbed. Just needs the carpets and fabrics to have a deep clean to remove the build up of dogs. There was a lovely touch of having the basics of milk tea coffee and biscuits left which we enjoyed while sitting outside enjoying the sunshine.

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you very much for your comments and we do appreciate your feed back. We do take pride in our cottage and the carpets are regularly given a deep clean. We would like to kindly point out that pets are allowed at Cheswood.

I came here for my hen weekend and had a brilliant time, friendly locals excellent places to eat and drink, and plenty to do, cheswood cottage was clean and tidy and beautifully located, very comfortable and homely, only downside was access driving into the cottage, very steep climb and very tight corners, would recommend reversing into the cottage driveway if you can turn your car around. All in all we had a lovely time and would definitely stay there again.

Location was dreadful even local taxis refused to take you up. Also information provided was ‘ample parking’ however when we got there the information book stated no more than 2 cars, we had 3. Great for people who love walking and have no joint issues. Cottage beautiful.

A cottage with lots of potential. A wonderful location, lovely and spacious with a lot of character. The balcony was gorgeous. We stayed in March so the prices were very good for the property in its current condition, but I would have been dissapointed if I was paying summer prices! The mattresses were very uncomfortable and the cottage just felt a bit grubby, I had to wash the banisters down as I was feed up with the sticky feel! Also it would be nice to have a few cleaning products and a broom!

Absolutely beautiful house with a magical feel to it, the views were beautiful no matter which window you looked out of and in the summer the balcony and porch would be fantastic to sit on. We went down as a group of 7 with 2 dogs and all fitted comfortably without feeling squashed. The whole house was light and spacious. A little bit cold but the extra heaters the owners left were a very thoughtful added extra.. The driveway up to the house was a little bit difficult but this was stated in the original information when booking. The weekend we chose was to visit was freezing cold but beautiful bright blue skies and some fantastic walks nearby. Most of the local amenities were closed in Lynmouth due to the time of year but we were visiting friends nearby so it didn't matter much to us. The local pubs were fantastic and allowed dogs which was great. Would definitely look at booking again if we were going down as a big group.

The house is in a great location on the hillside overlooking the river Lyn, the approach Road is narrow but navigable with care. The house is well equipped, comfortable and adequately heated. Shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants are all close by in either Lynmouth or Lynton, great walks are available from the doorstep for all levels of ability. In summary it's a large house, well positioned, for all types of holiday needs.

We loved the house, it was so well equipped and had everything we needed. The little touch of biscuits and dog treats were very appreciated. The drive up the house is a little tricky especially as the drive was very slippery when we went so our advise is to try to arrive in daylight as it's so much easier when you can see clearly. The location was fabulous apart from the drive and just a short walk down to the sea and local shops. It is quite a steep road down so not ideal for anyone who can't walk too far. The garden needs a little more work on the fencing to make it safe to leave your dog off lead exploring but we just made sure to only take our dog out on lead as he had plenty of exercise walking along the beach. All in all we thought it was a lovely location, the couple of things we've mentioned were not a big deal to us but worth mentioning as some people might struggle with them. It definitely offered value for money in a beautiful location.

Cheswood really delivered on tranquil location close to main areas of the delightful village of Lynmouth. The balcony offered protected seating that appeared almost within the canopy of a tremendous old pine tree with views of the river and buildings between branches. The accommodation is very comfortable and though requiring lots of stair work provides a great base to explore the wonderful local sites. Yes the cottage is accessed by steep driveway or alternative footpath, but this is made clear and so only the active need to stay. Hairpin bends on shared driveway are easily negotiated with a few turns and the turning point within Cheswood itself enabled me to turn a large estate car with a 6 point turn so visitors should not be put off by access issues. Leaving the property there is a footpath at the first hairpin bend downward which is easily missed but offers an alternate route to the bottom of Tors Rd. Definitely made a great choice choosing Cheswood for our stay!
