English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Warm, cosy cottage with unique ’gin-gang’ situated on the secluded Charlton Hall estate, three miles from the Northumberland coastline.

This beautiful country estate offers the perfect ‘home-away-from-home’ in England’s most rural county. This pretty cottage and private garden is out of sight of any other property. Close to Northumberland’s Heritage coast, this secluded cottage has been renovated throughout to provide a cosy interior with wood burner - perfect for warm winter breaks. Farm Cottage is accessed through the main farmyard area, boasts its own gin-gang, a circular outbuilding once used as a mule-driven mill. The cottage is located in a tranquil pocket of beautiful rolling countryside, under vast skies where the sun rises over beaches and sets onto the moorland of the Cheviots. An ideal country retreat, just 3 miles from sparkling white sandy beaches and close to Northumberland’s magnificent castles. Charlton Hall’s ancient parkland makes for perfect scenic walks. Guests can stroll along the Shippton Burn, which runs under stone bridges, filling the trout lake before meandering to the sea. They can also explore woodland bursting with bluebells and wild flowers in spring and summer; and see nesting buzzards, roe deer, foxes, badgers, hares and weasels – all abundant here due to careful environmental management. A cross country course takes guests who wish to bring their horses through woods and fields. The nearby beaches are also excellent for riding and dog walking. Local attractions include Holy Island, the Farne Islands, historic Berwick-upon-Tweed, Alnwick Castle and Garden, the Heritage coastline and castles. Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Edinburgh are just 1 hour by train. Guests arriving by air can be met at Newcastle Airport (40 minutes by road) by arrangement. Shops 6 miles.

We enjoyed the holiday and location but there was very little information about the cottage. The shower and hot water were turned off and we had to find and ask the owner how these worked. The owner was filling the water supply when we arrived (after 4 pm) so there was no water at all for a while. Whilst we wouldn't want/expect the owner (who lived next door) to be dropping in all the time, at no time were we asked if everything was OK. We have stayed in your cottages many times and I'm afraid this one did not come up to your usual standard.

We loved our little break here, the animals on the farm made it even better, hope to return soon :)

We really enjoyed our stay at Farm Cottage, I would highly recommend the cottage for couples with dog/s. The enclosed garden was excellent, and views over the countryside were breathtaking. We felt comfortable as the cottage was welcoming for our canine companion, so we relaxed in the knowledge the cottage has the lived in feel as we expected.

Lovely location although its a working (and rather junk strewn) farm so anyone with kids needs to keep them in the garden! Kitchen has everything you need and facilities are basic but adequate. Bedding and bathroom were clean but other areas were pretty dirty and cobwebby and the whole place is very tired. Really convenient where it is and only reason wouldn't return is that for the money charged there are high quality places locally. A lick of paint & spruce up and that'd probably change!
