Description

This holiday property, full of character and charm, is set in a village location - ideal for a couple who wish to discover Chichester and the local area.

This delightful, character 17th-century cottage is located next to the square in the picturesque village of Westbourne, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and Chalk Cottage is one of 66 cottages mentioned in it. This lovely, quaint village has a shop and post office, a selection of pubs with dining, and a historic church, all a few yards away. Dating back to the Georgian period, this deceptively spacious home would have been the coach house which allowed the carriages to access the former Lamb Hotel. The bedroom and bathroom on the first floor would have formed an arch for the horse and carts to proceed underneath – the ground floor has since been built, in more recent years, to provide the current living/dining room and kitchen. Steeped in history, Chalk Cottage boasts features such as sash windows and exposed wooden beams in the bedroom. The living/dining room has alcoves and there is a fire surround housing an electric woodburner. A door leads from the kitchen to an enclosed, secluded courtyard, ideal for enjoying an aperitif or al fresco dining.

There is so much to do in the area, with excellent walking, hiking and birdwatching in the South Downs National Park. The market town of Emsworth is only a 10-minute drive, with a train station, a host of cafés, pubs and restaurants, as well as a mill pond and estuary where many birds and other wildlife can be seen, and where scenic waterside walks can be enjoyed. Many attractions and National Trust homes are within easy reach, as well as Chichester with its cathedral, leisure facilities, Goodwood and Fontwell races. Also, historic Portsmouth with designer shopping outlets, historic dockyard, ferries to the Isle of Wight, Spinnaker Tower and more. Beaches including Emsworth and West Wittering are also nearby. Slightly further, visit The New Forest to the west and Arundel Castle to the east. Golf, riding, sailing walking, cycling can all be enjoyed nearby. Hot air balloon flights can be arranged with the owner. Shop, pub and restaurant 220 yards.

Living/dining room with electric woodburner. Kitchen with door to courtyard garden. Steep stairs to first floor: Beamed double bedroom with sash windows. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet.

Good location and we enjoyed the South Downs area. Well equipped cottage. Would have liked a change of linen for our 10 day stay.

Had a great time visiting the old haunts I hadn’t been back to since childhood - luckily the weather was on our side - the cottage is in a very central, peaceful location - was a great way to spend the bank holiday

A very well located cottage for all we wanted to do and it was interesting to learn of the history of the cottage. Exceptionally well presented bathroom and kitchen with equipment available. Did think that perhaps pots and pans had been dishwasher washed as there was a powdery film over some of them and they had to be washed before use. Had to contact owner over one small issue and she was very obliging. A lovely welcome pack had been left for us. Amenities in village were very good re shopping and eating out. Fantastic chip shop!! Parking was a bit of concern as there was no guaranteed parking spot so you were always a little concerned about finding one. We always did but a walk away from cottage.

We wanted a bolt hole to visit family and friends, this did this 100%. Would use it again and also would recommend it. Small which we wanted, very cosy and well equipped.

Lovely weekend 😀. Enjoyed staying in this cosy, comfortable and well equipped cottage. Had a fantastic tramp around Thorney Island - muddy. Grey, sometimes sunny, dry muddy, birds a plenty, bird song, signs of spring, more mud and a picnic! A perfect weekend 👍🏻.

It's the second time at Chalk Cottage for me and I shall be returning. The owners clearly make sure it's looked after well and beautifully presented. All rooms are tastefully decorated, the bathroom is excellent and the kitchen well stocked with all the accessories that you need.
