Casa Patino is a great base, for a family or group, from which to access local beaches or travel further afield to many world-class attractions, including Pisa and Florence. The house is well equipped, modern and clean, and, while close to to the moderately busy road and small town, is very well insulated from noise and light to ensure a quite and restful stay. Air conditioned bedrooms add to the comfort during a hot summer. Negotiating the driveway can be tricky, so avoid bringing or renting a long car, or check with the owner on parking options if driving something large. Restaurants and useful small shops, including a supermarket, are within a very short walk, and the local beach and train station are accessible on foot or via a short drive. Pisa is just a few minutes away on the train, and one can change there to reach Florence within another hour. The lovely walled city of Lucca is about 25 minutes drive away and is good for shopping, site-seeing and eating after a day on the local beaches at Torre del Lago or Viareggio. Puccini's house, overlooking mountains and lake, is now museum, nearby in the town, and is well worth a visit. There's no shortage of things to do and see, but Casa Patino itself is a also a lovely place in which to relax. If you need to stay on touch with the rest of the world, the house has WiFi access to the internet that we found to be moderately fast (~12 Mbit/s) and reliable thoughout our stay, although we didn't use it heavily. Outside, the areas we visited seemed to be well served by 3G (or better) mobile phone/broadband.
