English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Description

Retaining many original features, this charming cottage lies in the unique village of Canford Magna.

This delightful Grade II listed cottage is one in a row of similar properties, set along the road which leads to the river and various scenic walks, including Castlemans Way, which leads to Poole. The cottage is one of 111 originally built as estate workers’ cottages for the Canford Estate, which is now Canford School, and they are known locally as Lady Wimborne Cottages. Their construction is attributed to the philanthropic work of Lady Charlotte Guest, wife of Sir John Guest who was the owner of a vast Welsh iron and steel works, followed by the work of their daughter-in-law Cornelia, Lady Wimborne, from whom the cottages took their name. The cottages were built between 1867 and 1904 and each has a number over the front door indicating the order they were built.
This light and airy, tastefully styled cottage has original features such as lattice windows, a wooden porch, large ornamental door hinges and an ornamental fire surround in the bedroom. The open plan living/dining room leads to a sunny conservatory, which opens to an enclosed courtyard. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, the master benefiting from a walk-in wardrobe, and a separate bathroom.
There is a bus stop close by for trips to the charming market town of Wimborne, or to Poole with its award-winning sandy beach. There is so much to do in the area, with Bournemouth, Poole, Salisbury and Dorchester all within easy driving distance, as are The New Forest and Christchurch Harbour. Attractions to visit include Brownsea Island, Beaulieu Motor Museum, The Purbecks with the National Trust Corfe Castle and the seaside town of Swanage. Famous as ’Hardy Country’ many of Dorset’s towns and landmarks are recognisable from the novels of Thomas Hardy, who was born in Dorchester. The county is renowned for its miles of beautiful beaches as well as Jurassic Coastline for stunning views and walks, a World Heritage Site. For the outdoor enthusiast, there is walking and wildlife centres such as Avon Heath and Moors Valley with cycle hire, fishing, Segway and orienteering. Water sports are available nearby. Lovely cottage, really nice layout, spotless, family friendly and the dog enjoyed being there too. The only downsides were the early morning noise from the chickens/rooster a couple of doors down and the road was extremely busy. Walking the dog down by the river was great, there were patches that the dog could play in the water. Can walk to a pretty village via the river, we had afternoon tea there, very nice.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; I am so sorry that you experienced noise during the night. The cottage does have secondary double glazing, however with the brilliant weather we had this summer sleeping with windows open did bring with it the hazard of disturbance with outside noise.

Fell in love with this beautiful cottage. Such a lovely welcome from the owner leaving Prosecco and cream cakes in the fridge! Pretty decor, very well equipped - a real home from home. Thoroughly enjoyed staying there and will likely book again. Only small negative was the master bed being a bit too firm for us but that is personal choice. Otherwise absolutely would have no hesitation in rebooking.

Beautiful cottage in gorgeous setting. Its been tastefully renovated and is very homely. Canford Magna gives easy access to lots of places from Salisbury to Bournemouth, Christchurch and the south coast. Only downside is the busy road through the village which seems like a bit of a rat run

Beautiful cottage, spotlessly clean. No pub or shop within walking distance. Unfortunately on busy road.

A lovely week away for Christmas where were were able to see family but have some quiet time for ourselves. The road was noisy but as I have previously lived in the area I was aware of this and so did not unduly concern me. The fact that we could bring our pet and have a local riverside walk on the doorstep was an enjoyable part of the week.
