This property is part of our Welcome Cottages collection

A carefully curated collection of properties that offer high quality, good value accommodation in great locations across the UK, Ireland, France and Italy

Situated in the medieval town of Rye with its cobbled streets, narrow passages and beautifully preserved Tudor and Georgian buildings.

Built in 1830 this elegant town house in the conservation area in Rye, is under 500 yards from the historic Landgate Arch, through which one had to pass at high tide in order to reach the mainland when Rye was an island. Accommodation is provided over three floors and the garden faces the town Salts, originally salt marshes and now home to the town cricket pitch, pull up your deckchair and enjoy a quintessentially English summer pastime. A house for all seasons, winter offers the opportunity to light the wood burner and relax. Take a stroll on the cobbled streets of this Cinque Port town which during the 18th century was known as the smuggling capital of England and see the old vaulted cellars where the contraband was once stored.
Explore the galleries and tea shops and discover for yourself what the great masters, JMW Turner, Van Dyck and James Whistler found so inspiring about the area. The autumn hails the bonfire season in 1066 country, where many towns and villages including Rye celebrate on different weekends with processions, bonfires and of course firework displays. Visit Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, the remains of Henry VIIIs Camber Castle and try kite surfing on the huge expanse of sand at Camber, canoe on the Rother or hike the 1066 Country Walk. Golf, fishing and bike hire are available locally. There are train connections from Rye to Hastings, Ashford and London for further sightseeing opportunities. Beach 3 miles. Shop 200 yards, pub 50 yards, restaurant 250 yards.

Everything we needed was there, very comfortable.

Bridge cottage is lovely. It is a real family home with plenty of room. The secure garden was great for my boxer dog and the location ideal for dog walking yet the house is hidden away from the Rye tourists.

Loved it. Great house. Great location. Living room v nice space. I’d have appreciated a w/c on v top floor. There are a fair number of pretty windey steps from top and first floor to toilet for bedrooms without onsuite.

Cottage is small but very sweet. Kitchen is well equipped but small and it's not actually possible to fit 6 people around the kitchen table, (not if you want to open the fridge as well!), but that was a minor issue for us since we ate out. Bedrooms all good size and comfortable. Location is fantastic. Garden is nice to sit out in or have a BBQ. Stairs very steep.

The cottage was in a great location just a short walk and in the centre of Rye. Rye was really dog friendly. The cottage was lovely and clean with everything you wanted. The downside was the stairs and all the steps, which were not good for an elderly person.

Probably the nicest cottage we've stayed in (and there have been quite a few!) and the welcome pack on arrival was really thoughtful. The cottage is comfortable and cosy - but with plenty of space and light. It was spotlessly clean, well decorated and brilliantly equipped with everything we needed to have a relaxing and stress free break. We were sad to leave; it felt more like a second home than a holiday let - we'll definitely aim to go back for a longer stay and have already recommended it to friends and family.

We enjoyed our holiday and the locality, but unfortunately the accommodation let it down: -Many missing lightbulbs -Fitted sheet too small for the mattress -Downstairs very draughty -Cupboards full of clutter, house well equipped but lots of old things too. Nowhere in the kitchen to store our own items -The table would not really seat six, would not be able to open the fridge door. -Parking is down a bumpy dirt road at the rear. -Garden had rubble and litter in it Some parts of the house had been modernised to a high standard, but generally could do with some TLC.

The cottage is in an ideal location for the town of Rye. The garden was ideal for our two small dogs.
