Welcome Cottages

A carefully curated collection of properties that offer high quality, good value accommodation in great locations across the UK, Ireland, France and Italy

This cosy cottage with its warming wood burner is perfect any time of year to explore the beautiful county of Dorset.

This delightful 250-year old, end of terrace cottage sits in the small village of Puncknowle (pronounced ‘Punnel’), just 1½ miles from Chesil Beach and the magnificent Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, with its stunning views. It is a pretty holiday home, suited to couples, and has a wood burner to make it cosy in the colder months. To the east is Weymouth and Portland, the venue for the sailing at the 2012 Olympics, and to the west is picturesque Lyme Regis - a classic British seaside town. Closer to home is Abbotsbury with its famous swannery, and at the end of Chesil Beach sits West Bay, which has been the location for the TV series ’Broadchurch’, where you can find fishing and sight-seeing boat trips. Burton Bradstock, with its beach, majestic cliffs and two renowned restaurants, is just a few miles away. The local town of Bridport has excellent cafés, pubs, a vintage quarter, and a charming twice-weekly street market. Puncknowle is in the heart of West Dorset, so whether you are touring, cycling or walking, or even fishing from the beach, it’s a perfect base. The village has a wonderful, old thatched pub with a very warm welcome and good food, and there is a farm shop just a couple of miles down along the valley for local vegetables, meat, bread and delicious milk from their own Jersey herd. Beach 1½ miles. Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant 200 yards.

On arrival there was a leaking overflow pipe outside ( which owner was aware of ), and water coming in from under the fridge from outside ( owner also aware and said its fine!), and then we found damp all behind the TV in lounge, and on the wall behind the fridge, both which had been there for months, caused by the leak. The cutlery and dishes all need updating, as the cutlery is all stained from being old and never been washed up properly due to their not being a dishwasher. Hardly a plate/bowl to match, and looks like stuff my grandma had. We didn't have enough hot water to even fill a bowl to wash up without having to boil a kettle. Never cooked in property. There also wasn't enough hot water to have a bath, and shower luke warm. The sofa was dirty and hadn't been hovered properly, with hairs and stains on( found out its a sofa bed.) The garden was dirty, and not been swept for a long time, and the table and chairs were absolutely filthy, don't think they had been washed all year and didn't go near them We were booked for 7 days, but I started to be ill on 3rd day, and had to leave on 5th to see my doctor urgently , only to find out I had a lung infection from the damp spores being pushed around the lounge when we put the heater on during the evening as property gets cold despite temperatures of 25+ during the day

The first floor bedroom and bathroom are well done but the ground floor is quite basic. There is an inexpensive sofa and a thin rug on a stone floor. The back yard is not maintained and whilst it is a great location within a few minutes drive and walking distance of beaches, really good village pub, church, etc we wouldn't go back to that cottage.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We are very sorry that you found the cottage to be unsatisfactory. We feel that, rather than basic, the cottage is simply but tastefully furnished. The sofa is not inexpensive and the ‘thin rug’ is an attractive kilim. We regret that the garden has not been maintained over the last few weeks during the inclement weather since the snow - it is being done between stays this weekend and regularly throughout the summer.

This visit was arranged to coincide with the birth of our grandson who arrived on Sunday 25th February. We know the area well and took advantage of the many dog walks, then returned to the cottage and spent cosy evenings in front of one of the most efficient log burners ever, which is fortunate because our visit also coincided with the 'Beast from the East'. A lovely little place and we thoroughly recommend it.

Nice cottage in a great area - could have done with more crockery and cutlery and a better sofa but all in all a good property. The water heater needs looking at we only managed a half washing up bowl of hot water at a time - we didn’t need any more but if we needed to bathe (a little one for example) it would have been a problem

The cottage was, to be honest, a bit small for us. We are both tall and had to duck to get into the kitchen! Our dogs are also big - albeit quiet and well-behaved, but we did feel a bit cramped. The bedroom and bathroom were very comfortable and efficient. The cottage would be perfect for a couple with little dogs. We loved the proximity to the beaches and Bridport was lively and fun.
