Tucked down a quiet little lane (access to residents only) within the village conservation area in Angmering, Bluebell Cottage is a quaint, thoughtfully renovated and stylishly furnished, Grade II listed, 16th-century, terraced, character cottage. To the rear of the row of cottages was a secret tunnel leading from the church which was used by the priests when they had to make a timely escape. Sadly, this has now been filled in. The cottage has its own enclosed suntrap courtyard garden to the rear, which is the ideal place for a morning coffee or glass of wine after a day’s sightseeing!
Beauty treatments at a local spa, afternoon tea, gastro pub dining, fish and chips and a real ale country pub are all available within walking distance. Buses and trains are easily accessible and provide links to the seaside towns of Worthing, Portsmouth and Brighton. Visit Chichester with its marina and cathedral, or explore the historical market town of Arundel, set within the South Downs National Park. Arundel makes for a great day out, with its impressive castle and gardens, and fishing and boating on the River Arun. It also hosts a ten-day festival in August, which is not to be missed.
Nature lovers will enjoy the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, a 60-acre reserve at the foot of Offham Hangar. There is also easy access to the South Downs National Park for excellent walks, and in spring you can enjoy the beautiful bluebells in Angmering Woods. Horse racing enthusiasts have a choice of Goodwood, Fontwell Park and Brighton racecourses. Unspoilt beaches are close by, including Shoreham, Rustington, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis. There is a choice of two golf courses (one with a ten-pin bowling alley) about 1¼ miles away. Beach 2½ miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 50 yards.

This is a lovely cottage in a good location in Angmering Village. Although there is no direct parking outside, this was not a problem as we were able to park in front of the church. We found everything we needed in the village, with a lovely butchers, co-op and a super fish and chip shop, where the haddock was amongst the best we have tasted! There are just a few things to be beware of - it is not a cottage for tall people! The doorways are just six foot high and the stairs are very steep, especially the step into the bedroom and one into the bathroom. The shower is over the bath and again there were height restrictions for my husband with his head on the ceiling!

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your comments and we are pleased that you thought that the cottage was lovely. This is a quaint 16th century grade 2 character cottage and as stated in the description, “with some low doorways”. We are sorry that you found the doorways a problem with your husbands height but low ceilings are a feature of a quaint character cottage. The stairs are no steeper than a normal tread but are open to one side at the very bottom as stated in the description. There is however a hand rail for safety on the opposite wall. We are pleased that this did not spoil your time in Bluebell Cottage.

I enjoyed my week saying at Bluebell Cottage and used the property as a place to stay, travelling around West Sussex to visit venues I had chosen prior to the holiday. I did not use any local amenities so cannot comment on those.

    Response from:

the seating arrangements were not comfortable . Too large sprawling sofa in tiny sitting room. A corner sofa unit would have been far more practical and comfortable allowing more much needed space. The lack of dining table and chairs made it difficult to balance trays on our knees on a sinking couch. Kitchen , well equipped . Bedroom comfortable.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your review – although we are rather surprised having agreed to let you into the property early for your convenience for your short stay. The cottage is ‘Romantic’ and that is why a new ‘cuddle’ couch has been added to the property. It is not too big for the room and takes up less room than a large corner sofa. The quality of the cottage has been reflected in the English Country Cottages 4 star grading. As a 17th Century cottage and part of the ‘Heritage’ collection, the rooms will never be spacious and that is part of the charm of a quaint cottage as clearly shown in the photographs. We have now added a small table for dining for two to further improve guest comfort. I would also refer to previous reviews that were one ‘9’ and three ‘10’s. As this is our first response to a review I would like to thank the previous guests for their accurate comments.
