A former miner’s cottage nestled in a rural setting, on the edge of the Lake District and close to Blake Fell, the nearest of the Lakeland fells.

Blake Fell Cottage sits just 3 miles to the west of the Lake District National Park in the small hamlet of Asby. Dating back to the 19th century, it was one of many such terraced cottages in the district built to house the influx of miners following the discovery of coal, iron ore, lime and sandstone in the area. Families with up to eleven children lived in these two bedroomed cottages until as recently as the 1930s. Conditions inside the cottage would have been very primitive, with the privy located at the bottom of the garden. In the second half of the 20th century, Blake Fell Cottage was purchased along with the other seven cottages for £50 and it was then that they were modernised, each with the addition of a single storey bathroom.
The original, beautiful sandstone fireplace was uncovered during further extensive renovations in the early 21st century. The deeds of the cottage require that any owner of Blake Fell Cottage must not sell alcohol, this was to ensure that there was no competition to the trade at the ’Black Cock’ public house, which was just across the road at the time. The cottage’s name sake is clearly visible from Asby to the east, sitting just inside the Lake District National Park and surrounded by Forestry Commission planting. Blake Fell is the highest of the Loweswater fells at 573m providing views from its summit as far east as the Helvellyn range, and north west to the Solway Firth and Dumfries and Galloway beyond.
There is fly fishing available just 2.4 miles away at Cogra Moss Trout Fishery, permits from £25, March to October. There are three golf courses within a 6 mile range and the nearest is Workington 5.4 miles and non members are welcome and pony trekking is available at Ennerdale 5.1 miles away. Shop 3 miles, pub 3½ miles, restaurant 8 miles.

We didn't enjoy all the rules and regulations. The neighbours were intrusive. You need a car to stay here, even for suitable dog walks which sort of defeats the objective. For the price we shouldn't have felt responsible for cleaning the property before we left. Couldn't relax properly which was a real shame.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; It is very sad to read your review and I was also really surprised because you had told me during your stay what a lovely time you were having and how much you loved the cottage. I know there were a number of issues during your brief stay with us however I hope that others who read the reviews will be able to draw their own conclusions by referring to the comments and high scores provided by our other guests and from my response below. We do seek to make it clear that the cottage is in the depths of the countryside, via the written details, the location map and also as depicted in the photographs provided on the website so I am sorry if this took you by surprise. The lack of amenities is what many people seek in order to get away from it all, so as referred to in the previous guest review, for many being away from it all is deemed a blessing rather than a negative. I understand you went to stay in Whitehaven after your stay in Asby which I hope provided you with the urban environment that you were really seeking. The cottage is surrounded by wonderful countryside, with Ennerdale, Loweswater and Crummock Water all just a few minutes away. Our caretaker who looks after the cottage, is always on hand and would have readily helped you with additional dog walking ideas in addition to the laminated suggestions, maps and various guidebooks provided in the cottage had she but known. Being situated in such a rural and peaceful area does mean that a car is very helpful to make the most of the countryside. Again, I am so sorry that this was unexpected for you. As Blake Fell Cottage is in a terrace there are close neighbours so we do respectfully ask for consideration to be given to our neighbours and their enjoyment of their gardens. I am sorry that you found that request unappetising. Our neighbours are lovely and it was regrettable that the constant barking of your dogs, and your shouting at them, caused upset and led to complaints – something we have not experienced before. It was also regrettable that, although we do ask that the external light be turned off at night, I received complaints that is was left on all night. This meant that our neighbours were disturbed by the brightness and the dogs barking in the garden late into the night. We apologise that we had to ask you to leave on your final day. I know that you were enjoying the suntrap in the garden, however there is a requirement for departures to be before 10am (which is stated within the booking conditions), with all the holiday cottages so that they can be turned around for the next guests. By 12pm we were really pushed to get things sorted and so had no option but to reiterate our respectful request for you leave. Had a later departure time been requested in advance, we would have done our utmost to accommodate your party. I am sorry that you felt it unreasonable to leave the cottage clean and tidy. We pride ourselves in maintaining the cottage to the highest standards and indeed you scored us 10/10 for the level of cleanliness. I make no apology for the fact that it is very important for us that guests care for the property and clear up after their dogs - something that is a general requirement for all guests in cottages through this website, and again this is stated in the booking conditions that the property is to be left in a similar condition in which it is found. Our guest experience is of major importance to us and we have sought to equip the cottage with everything possible to ensure comfort and convenience. I am unsure where we failed you on this occasion with reference to value for money and comfort/equipment other than I think in general our old cottage in our small, very rural hamlet in beautiful West Cumbria was not in hindsight suited to your needs.

This is a lovely cottage in a fantastic area. It was emaculately clean and maintained very well. There was even a gate to the stairs to keep your four legged family downstairs. We had very mixed weather and the heating was excellent and we used the wood burner to cosy it up further. The garden is basic but perfect for purpose. The kitchen is well equipped and tea making supplies were provided on arrival. Upstairs the main bedroom is large and the bed was very comfortable. Long walks and a warm bed made for a very rejuvinating time. There was a fantastic information pack with everything you could want to know. The dog walking suggestions were excellent and the fishing lake is only a 5 minute drive for a lovely walk. Further afield there is Loweswater and Ennerdale with great walking, or Scafell Pike if you're feeling energetic. I've given 10's for amenities because whilst Asby is fairly remote, it's a short drive to find things you need, and the rural setting is why we booked it. There are plenty of pubs around and the information pack has loads of suggestions. All in all it was a wonderful holiday in a beautiful part of the country, and the cottage could not have provided more for the two of us and our two dogs.

My friend and I stayed at Blake Fell cottage for the weekend and enjoyed it very much. We were lucky enough to have the sunshine during the days but still had chilly nights. Once the heating was on (and the added bonus of electric blankets) the cold wasn't a problem. We had all we needed while we were there and Steph was great at providing information about the area which was fabulous as we only had a few days away. It was perfect for two friends catching up, thanks to Steph and Gaynor.

Blake Fell Cottage has been thoughtfully set up as a holiday cottage. Its is compact and was ideal for the two of us and our dog. Very steep staircase, not for the faint hearted. We loved the location being both near to coast and to the lakes, travelling to places, in such a beautiful area, was never really an issue. The owners left us a form to fill in with any teething issues that we thought should be addressed. Parking was difficult on a few evenings on our return, but the car was never too far away. It is on a very fast country lane through the village, but suppose that's a sign of the times.

Response on behalf of the owner. Many thanks for taking the time to provide your lovely feedback. We are so pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay at Blake Fell Cottage and made the most of all that the area has to offer - both mountains and coastline in easy reach. I hope you found the sturdy banister rail just the job for those few steep stairs. We hope to welcome you back again soon.

We stayed at Blake Fell Cottage for a week in August 2017 having never been to the Lake District before and had such a great holiday. The cottage was very clean and comfortable - the owners provided all necessary utensils and equipment (plates, cups, cutlery, frying pans, cooker, washing machine, cleaning products etc.) as well as providing little extras (shampoo, travel toothbrush etc.) at a minimal charge and free dog biscuits if you take your dog. The garden was a little small but really nice to sit out in and have a drink on an evening after a long day's activities, so it suited us well. The beds were so comfortable it was hard to get up in the mornings. TV and wifi were also provided at no extra cost and also plenty of 'things to do' leaflets/magazines were available. The small hamlet of Asby had no shops or pubs but supermarkets were available in nearby towns such as Cockermouth and Whitehaven (and other towns), smaller shops and pubs were within even shorter distances (Frizington) - we liked the fact that Asby was so quiet and again it suited us. The Lake District itself is absolutely beautiful, so much to see and do - loads of adventure sport opportunities (kayaking, cycling, walking etc.) to the more relaxed pace (would recommend a boat trip on Windermere and a visit to Muncaster Castle with it's ghosts and birds of prey centre). We loved it, our son is still crying to come back to Blake Fell Cottage and the Lake District over a week later. We definitely will soon. ps. If you are on the taller side remember to watch your head - I banged mine a few times on the door between kitchen and washing machine/ back garden area...my fault, it is well signed and this is a common feature in older cottages.

Response on behalf of the owner:- Hi Paul, many thanks for your lovely feedback. We are so glad you had such a great time. It certainly sounds like you really made the most of all that the Lakes has to offer during your holiday. As you say, the cottage is in a very quiet rural location but amenities are all within easy reach. We really look forward to seeing you again soon. Very best wishes Steph.
