Welcome to Birds’ Nest: a tiny bolthole by the sea that’s the perfect compromise between glamping and a cottage. Although small, the coastal-inspired furnishings, open-plan layout, beamed ceiling and wood burner create a really cosy, studio feel: designer lighting is mixed with upcycled furniture, rare breed sheepskin rugs and luxury, leather sofa and footstool from High Seat Limited to create a space that is truly relaxing.
There’s a real focus on quality and sustainability, with guests treated to samples of loose-leaf tea from The Rare Tea Company and biodegradable coffee pods from The Eden Project. Coupled with fair trade coffee syrups, they offer something a bit different. The focus on minimising packaging and single-use plastics extends to the complementary toiletries, with hand wash, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner by Duck Island decanted into glass bottles.
There’s a small natural history and countryside library to browse indoors and binoculars, laminated Field Studies Council guides, walking guides, OS maps and a Tide Table to borrow, as well as a generous supply of mint humbugs to sustain you on your adventures!
The super-king-size bed is positioned beneath skylights with remote-control blinds: perfect for star-gazing from the comfort of your bed, in an area noted for its dark skies. The bathroom, with bath and over-head shower, will be replaced by a brand new wet-room with walk-in shower, featuring high-grade, non-slip flooring and a walk-in shower with a seat and grab-rails. The safety features are combined with a traditional feel to the fittings, giving it a feel in keeping with the age of the building and a world away from an ’adapted’ bathroom (despite the fact it is!).
The kitchen area is small, but well-equipped. However, due to its size, it is perhaps not the best choice for gourmet cooks; it’s rather a place to prepare breakfasts, snacks, packed lunches and light meals. There are 2 electric rings; a Ninja dual air-fryer; slow-cooker and microwave, but no electric oven.
Outside, 7 steps lead to a viewing platform with stunning vistas over Carrick Bay, a BBQ and seating. There’s also a private parking space alongside the property plus a space in a shared car park with adjacent cottages.
Birds’ Nest is best suited for couples looking for a comfy space to relax after a full day’s exploring, rather than work-from-home guests who just want a change of scenery without compromising on domestics like an oven, laundry facilities etc. With swimming, golf, riding, birdwatching, walking and some amazing places to eat and drink in the area, there’s always plenty to see and do before you return happy and exhausted to our ’luxury shed’.
Please note we are unable to take bookings at certain times of year because Birds’ Nest is made available to local families who need the ground-floor accommodation to welcome loved ones over Christmas and Easter. The owners also donate 2 weeks a year in March and August to ’Give Us Time’, a charity that provides breaks for Armed Forces personnel and their families.
Can this bit be added to guest information While a well-behaved dog is welcome, dogs are not permitted on furniture, or to be left unattended. There’s no secure garden as yet.
