Description

Retaining many original features, this Grade II listed cottage is the epitome of tranquillity and romance.

Betsy Cottage is a medieval Grade II listed semi-detached cottage which has been beautifully restored. The ancient beams and flagstone floors retain the authentic character and charm of this peaceful and romantic retreat. The large bedroom has an ornate four-poster bed and additionally there is a wonderfully comfortable, working antique copper bath in the bedroom. The living room provides a stunning inglenook fireplace complete with Victorian wood-burning range and bread oven. The outside seating area is within a shared courtyard.

Glastonbury is a 5-minute drive away, as is Street with its outlet shopping at Clarks Village. Wells is 20 minutes, and Bath and Bristol 50 minutes drive away. The cottage is located in the heart of the conservation village of Butleigh; a charming little village tucked away at the head of the Somerset Levels. Butleigh boasts its own shop, post office and a friendly local pub offering excellent local ales and traditional food. Much of the countryside is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, perfect for countless walks. Horse riding nearby. Shop, pub and restaurant 100 yards.

Ground floor: Living/dining room. Kitchen. Steep, narrow stairs to first floor: 1 double (5ft four poster) bedroom with free-standing copper bath and en-suite toilet.

Woodburner in living room (initial fuel included). Electric heaters, electricity, bed linen and towels included. Electric hob. Combi microwave/oven/grill. Enclosed courtyard garden with patio, sitting-out area and furniture. On road parking. Welcome pack. No smoking. No children under 12 years, except babes in arms. NB: 3 steps in garden. Neighbouring property is accessed via courtyard garden.

This cottage was comfortable and surprisingly spacious; also, in the heat wave, blissfully cool. The location was lovely and quiet but within easy reach of Glastonbury and Street, so shops were nearby, and the store/ post office had a good range, too. The countryside was beautiful. There were a few things that would have improved our stay. The kitchen is small but adequate in size, but cooking on the mini stove isn't easy and I gave up on breakfasts when I saw the frying pan, which I would have thrown away from my kitchen. The fridge door came off the top hinge unless you were very careful opening it, and was awkward to replace. The lounge was very comfortable but we had to replace one of the light bulbs as soon as we arrived, and tightened the other one up so all three worked, which was a minor inconvenience. The en suite toilet would benefit from better lighting as it's inadequate for shaving, make up application and contact lens insertion! Plus a towel rail would be useful in there. But the bed was very comfortable and the bedroom is far larger than most hotels, and there was ample hot water for the bath. Parking wasn't always great due to the narrow street, and we had a notice put on the car asking us not to park on the verge (there was nowhere else that night). This wasn't very neighbourly considering that verges are part of the public highway and it was rough grass anyway, next to a 6 foot wall, so hardly inconveniencing anyone! So all in all, a pleasant place to stay, but there was room for a few improvements.

Had problem with bath, but this was sorted out promptly and with efficiency despite the fact that it was Christmas Eve and the owners were in the middle of a Christmas party.
