Next door, the modern kitchen and dining area makes the most of the space with a gorgeous farmhouse table. Upstairs the large master kingsize bedroom is bright and sunny and looks over the street below. The second bedroom is smaller but still offers a double bed and writing desk. Alfriston was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086. It is wonderfully preserved, and strolling along the ancient streets flanked by a charming variety of crooked buildings can feel like stepping back in time. There is a wonderful choice of pubs, cafés and tea rooms in the village. Alfriston is also home to a host of independent shops including an antiques shop, a vintage clothing store and award-winning independent book shop, ‘Much Ado’ which stocks both antiquarian and new books.
The award-winning Drusillas Park is a mile from the cottage. A great family day out that includes a small zoo and a multitude of rides and experiences. Other nearby attractions include Glyndebourne Opera with performances running from early May to late August (tickets must be applied for well in advance), Firle Place, a privately owned country house that dates from the time of Henry VIII, Pevensey Castle, the pebble beaches at Seaford, and the Long Man of Wilmington.
Lewes is also only 10 miles away, nestled amongst the South Downs. This impressive county town is steeped in history and heritage with a thriving cultural scene. Climb to the top of the 1000-year-old Norman castle to behold the panoramic views and explore the Museum of Sussex Archaeology next door. Shopping is also a pleasure, browse the antique shops of the Cliffe, visit the Farmers market on the first Saturday every month to pick up some delicious local produce or just relax and watch the world go by in one of the many tea rooms. Lewes Bonfire celebrations in early November lead into the festive season and a stay in this traditional holiday cottage during November and December will get you in the mood for a Dickensian Christmas.
