Superb views across woods and fields from this charming cottage, with feature brick fireplace, and Petworth House and Gardens close by.

This charming semi-detached holiday cottage is set in a picturesque sleepy hamlet with superb views across woods and fields towards the South Downs. It has been comfortably furnished, and extended over the years to provide a large, light living room with a feature open fire in brick surround, and a reading area with desk. French doors lead to the mature enclosed garden, and the downland views can be enjoyed from here whilst enjoying alfresco dining or relaxing with a drink. As well as a breakfast area, there is also a dining room.
This area is very popular with visitors, and quaint Byworth is a Grade II listed area, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and boasts a well known 17th-century inn close to the cottage, with excellent food and terraced gardens with spectacular views. Situated just 1 mile to the east of the historic market town of Petworth, described as the antique capital of the south, and where Petworth House and Gardens can be visited. Other National Trust homes and gardens include West Dean Gardens, Parham House, The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum. There are numerous scenic country walks locally, and the South Downs National Park is also close by. Also within easy reach are Goodwood horse/motor racing, Fontwell, Cowdray for golf and polo, Midhurst, Arundel Castle, Wild Fowl and Wetlands Trust and Chichester with its ornate cathedral. Beaches at The Witterings or Worthing can be reached in under half an hour. Golf, cycling and riding can also be enjoyed nearby. Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant 20 yards.

Enjoyed our stay in this quirky cottage. It was clean, comfortable and reasonably well equipped although the shower was poor. Good location and footpaths from the door and excellent pub opposite.

My husband and I had read some negative reviews of this cottage so we booked our two week stay there with some reluctance. Our own experience is that Barrington Cottage is a mixed bag, in some respects quite charming but in other respects failing to match the high standards I’ve enjoyed in other cottages in the South East. Positives: The location is in a tiny hamlet with a fab pub within close walking distance. You will need to drive to Petworth to buy bread and milk but for many the peacefulness of the bill will be an advantage. The cottage is also surprisingly spacious and has a nice garden which we unfortunately couldn’t make use of. The view of the village from the main bedroom is lovely too. In all, the layout is quite quirky. Negatives: The shower isn’t fit for purpose so after a day we gave up using it in favour of baths (luckily there are 2 baths!) The standard of cleanliness is poor. On arrival I cleaned the throws on the living room sofas as they seemed not to have been washed for quite some time. The tired and dirty carpets should be replaced. There was a revolting leak under the toilet in one of the bathrooms. And generally, the decor, furniture and facilities are tired and would benefit from updating. However, if you are prepared to overlook these issues, you will be rewarded with a character cottage in a serene location.
