Barn Owl Retreat is located on the fringe of the Lake District National Park, with the village amenities just over a mile away, there is a shop for the essentials as well as two excellent pubs offering great food and locally produced ales. The cottage is just 2 miles from the Lake District National Park with an abundance of walks, cycle routes, wildlife, mountains and lakes. Ennerdale Water is just 5½ miles away and is regarded as one of the most unspoilt areas in the Lake District National Park, and is full of wildlife, with red squirrels, osprey and buzzards to name a few. If that’s not enough, Loweswater is also 5½ miles away which leads to Crummock Water and then Buttermere. The scenery around this unspoilt part of the Lakes is stunning and the beauty, colours and unforgettable panoramic views are simply amazing. Whether you want an easy stroll, a challenging walk or a serious climb, you’ve got a great base to start your adventures. Just 7 miles away is the town of Whitehaven with good restaurants, supermarkets, a popular harbour and good shopping. St Bees Head and Heritage Coast is 10½ miles away, offering excellent coastal walks and golden sandy beaches, very popular with families. Head south for a trip on La’al Ratty, the famous Cumbrian miniature railway line which travels between Ravenglass and Dalegarth for a great family day out. Or if you’re feeling really energetic, you’re just a 55-minute drive to Wast Water and Wasdale Head giving you the shortest and most direct route to the summit of the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike.
