An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

With floor-to-ceiling windows and a touch of charm and elegance, this romantic retreat for couples lies in tranquil surroundings.

Barlow Brook Cottage is a gorgeous retreat for couples who want their own space away from the crowds, in the heart of the beautiful Derbyshire countryside. This detached, tranquil cottage sits in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and lies adjacent to the owners’ home. It is completely self-contained with its own private driveway, allowing you to relax in peaceful surroundings in considerable comfort. The welcoming owners have done everything possible to combine many luxuries of a top hotel, with the charm and freedom of your own country cottage, resulting in a truly fantastic property. Its open plan layout gives the cottage a wonderful light and airy feel, and the contemporary interior with walnut flooring and shaker kitchen adds to the sense of luxury. Light floods in from two floor-to-ceiling windows, and from your bed you can sit back and enjoy superb views over the surrounding woodland.
Conveniently located on the edge of the Peak District National Park, the cottage boasts excellent walks direct from the door through the surrounding woodland. The magnificent historic houses of Chatsworth Estate and Haddon Hall, and the market town of Bakewell can all be reached in around 20 minutes, as can Hathersage, a village rich in historical, industrial and literary associations. The beautiful honeypot village of Castleton and the wonderfully historic plague village of Eyam are around a 30-minute drive. Spend a day in Matlock, with its cable car ride to the Heights of Abraham, or visit Edale, home to the start of the Pennine Way. The spa town of Buxton can be reached in around 45 minutes. Shop 2½ miles and pub/restaurant ½ mile.

Ten steps to entrance. Open-plan living/dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows, kitchen area and wooden floor. First floor: Double bedroom with TV and en-suite shower room with toilet.

Barlow Brook Cottage was warm and cosy, a traditional building skilfully converted with a modern, spacious living/dining area and bright, sunny, imaginative décor, even during the grey December Christmas week. The owners were very welcoming - we greatly appreciated the home-made loaf, seasonal cookies and stunning Christmas tree. The cottage is by and large very well-equipped, though a washing machine would be useful for longer stays. The location is exceedingly quiet but convenient for access to the Peak District. The village has 2 excellent pub/restaurants, the Peacock and the Tickled Trout (we did not get to the third pub). Barlow Brook Cottage would be a superb place to stay in warmer weather, when guests could take better advantage of the garden and brook-side seating.

A lovely peaceful location, superb garden with a brook and a resident kingfisher, if you're lucky enough to see him. Lots of very interesting places can be found nearby. The hosts are very welcoming, and there was homemade bread and biscuits waiting for us on our arrival.

Lovely cottage for a quiet getaway within beautiful surroundings. Friendly owners have created an oasis of calm away from the hustle and bustle but within easy driving distance to lots of attractions.
