We had a great time at Staffa Cottage. The cottages are attached to an old historic building that was more recently used as a hotel but is now unused. The cottage we stayed in was period and well equipped and clean with everything we needed. The location is secluded and quiet. Chris the owner was very welcoming and friendly with lots of helpful tips about the local area. The whole set up is dog friendly which was very important for us The local shop is about 4 to 5 min drive with all the basics you need. There is a local sandy beach at Tralee but we never got to visit. Oban is about 20 mins drive and is a vibrant town with great sea food and fish and chips and main supermarkets. We booked the car ferry to Mull and then from there after an hour's drive across Mull, the ferry to Iona, all easily done in a day. In the other direction about 30 mins away is Glencoe which has one of the most breathtaking drives in the British isles. Another 20 mins or so on from there is Fort William and Ben Nevis. We were lucky to have great weather during our stay so managed to climb it to the top, though our legs are still aching now. On the last night of our stay we were fortunate to have the best steaks we have ever tasted in the Old Inn in Appin about 10 mins drive away (again recommended by Chris). There are lots of other things to do on day trips from the cottage with advanced planning and a car is essential if staying there. Our first visit to beautiful Scotland and we are glad we chose the cottage we did

Although we love the location and have stayed 3 times now, twice at Balcardine, we would not go back. The cottage had everything you need but overall it was very shabby. The decor and furniture need updating as well as the windows, bathroom and a proper secure lock on the door.
