Watch the continuous antics of the varied birdlife visiting the lake from the balcony. Set in the heart of the Blackmore Vale, renowned for its natural beauty, Bankside and Lakeside Hut provide an ideal base from which to explore the many attractions in the area. Gillingham has a rich history dating back over 1000 years, and has enjoyed mentions in a great deal of literature, including the work of Thomas Hardy. Shaftesbury is a small market town in Dorset with a recorded history that goes back to the Anglo Saxon times. You can experience what it was like back in King Alfred’s time, whilst walking round the ruins of the abbey, or just enjoying the history of the area displayed in the Gold Hill Museum. The town is the home of Gold Hill, made famous by the ‘Hovis’ advertisement, and has magnificent views over the Blackmore Vale. There is a wide variety of independent shops, pubs and restaurants for tourists to enjoy. This is known as the ‘Gateway to the South West’, from which you can tour the area from Stonehenge in the east, to Bath and Bristol to the north, and Bournemouth and the Jurassic Coast to the south. A visit to the National Trust Stourhead House and Gardens is also recommended. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.
Bankside (ref. UKC1414) and Lakeside Hut (ref. W43465) can be booked together to accomodate up to 4 guests.

I hate saying how good this place is cos it might get so busy I can't book it. Mainly, it's quiet and peaceful, the only noise is the birds singing. Saying that, you have to drive into the local town for shopping but there is an ASDA, a Waitrose and a Liddle, there are also pubs and a chippie but it is a good 5 to 10 minute drive away. The hut is well equiped and it's all good quality fittings and equipment and the beds are comfortable. Yes, it's small but adequate for us two and two small dogs, which are very welcome there. If you're going for the fishing you won't be dissapointed, the first fish I caught was over 10lb, the largest of the week about 15-17 lbs. There are a lot of young fish in there which is testament to how healthy the lake is. We have been there about 4 times now and we will go back. If you're young and you want night life and disco don't bother. Your hosts are very friendly and welcoming and it is a working farm so occasionally the farmer will start his tractor or his saw for a while. We love it here and so do our dogs, they have the freedom to wander where they will, there are sheep but they will soon chase the dogs off. All in all a lovely, peaceful place

We had a great time at lakeside, weather was a little chilly but the hut was clean and comfortable and warm with the radiator on low. Fishing was very good and the owners were very nice and helpful, will be going there again next year

The perfect getaway for a couple, off set from the main farm building, overlooking a wonderful tranquil carp filled lake with an island that is a haven for birds and ducks (and a passing heron). Most idyllic place to truly unwind and relax. Friendly hosts, nice welcome gift of a bottle of wine and a pint of milk. The hut is more spacious than you would think, plenty of storage, all mod cons, full size fridge, induction hob and microwave, all the pots and pans you would need, plates glassware and mugs. inc tea towel and washing up liquid/sponges. Freeview TV and wifi. Electric oil filled heater and an electric log effect fire to keep you toasty on the colder nights. Great sized double shower, bathroom is more than adequate, towels supplied (and loo rolls) everywhere is so clean. Down the steps to your back garden with undercover BBQ & seating area, enclosed midi sized secure grass area for any dogs you may bring for you - sheep mowing the grass. It is actually a magical place, we are seriously thinking of returning next year.
