Ideal for a romantic break, or a small family, Bakers Cottage is the ideal retreat from which to explore County Durham.

Bakers Cottage, which is believed to have been a place where villagers could buy their bread from, is a typical terraced cottage in the market town of Middleton-in-Teesdale, in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Historically this was the most northern town of the Yorkshire Dales. The property has an open sitting-out area to the rear and original stone flooring in the kitchen and a cosy open fire in the living room.

Middleton-in-Teesdale has pubs serving food, shops and tea rooms, and there is plenty to keep you occupied. The Pennine Way passes through the village and Low Force, 3¼ miles, is the first of a series of spectacular waterfalls in the area. Amongst Middleton’s attractions is High Force Waterfall - one of England’s largest single-drop waterfalls, and there’s a lovely walk which is popular with families.

Barnard Castle and Bowes Museum are easily reached and the area offers walking and cycling for all abilities. Selset or Grassholm Reservoirs are nearby for fishing and sailing. The splendid scenery encourages all kinds of outdoor pursuits from cycling along the C2C route and cross-country hacks, to water sports and wonderful walks.

This charming market town is more like a big village, framed by the Pennine Fells and nestling beside the River Tees. Enjoy its delightfully old-fashioned and relaxing atmosphere. The Lake District is a 45-minute drive away and well worth a visit. Shop, pub and restaurant 250 yards.

What a lovely cottage. Stayed for 4 nights with my adult daughter and had a lovely time. Great base for travelling around with Newcastle or the lakes within an hours drive. Would definitely stay again.
