Half a mile from the beach

This spacious, well furnished and equipped dormer bungalow, adjacent to the owners home is situated in the coastal village of Ulrome, only 0.5 mile walk to the lovely beach, it makes the ideal seaside holiday home. 5 miles north of Hornsea, famous for its pottery, mere and Freeport Shopping Centre. Situated 8 miles south of Bridlington with its seafront rides, habour and cliff top walks. An excellent touring base for the other seaside resorts of Filey, Scarborough, Whitby, Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay all well worth a visit. Inland to the market towns of Driffield, Beverley and the historic city of York all within easy reach. Shop 0.5 miles, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

    Angela and Chris gave us a warm welcome. We have visited Avonlea twice over the New Year period. Can not fault this accommodation very cosy and comfortable. Location ideal for the beaches (Fraisthorpe and Bridlington) our Jack Russell Eddie loves coming and we will definitely be going back.

    Not well equipped, the 2 large sofas were filthy. The kitchen was not well equipped. There was no clean bedding available after the first week. No heating between 1130 and 1530. The step leading out of the door was unsafe. Hot water tap had to be fiddle with to get hot water but went cold after a few seconds. Rear garden needs to be sorted out, let's of machinery everywhere. Had to share the owners hoover.

We have read your comments with interest and would like to respond as follows: We are unsure as to your comment 'not well equipped' as the property is furnished to a very high standard with everything that is required of a four star self catering property. The property meets all the minimum criteria for 6 guests and as there were only 2 of you this is rather puzzling. That said we have requested an inventory list from Visit England and will cross reference with the facilities on offer in each room including the kitchen. We will of course purchase anything we find to be missing. The settees are certainly not 'filthy' but are a good quality cream suede and after a very busy, fully booked season, may not have been at their very best. It is not practical to clean a suite in a 5 hour turnaround. Bed linen is provided at Avonlea with beds made up ready for arrival, however it was an oversight on our part that a spare set for your second week was not provided. Please accept our apologies for this, should you have requested a fresh set this would have been provided. We will ensure that for future long stay visits a second set is left in the property. We will address the issue of no heating during the hours stated during the winter months; many thanks for bringing this to our attention this was an oversight on our part. The hot tap has now been adjusted and is back in working order. At this time of year it is difficult to showcase gardens at their best and the only "machinery" we can think of is the hedge-cutter, strimmer and lawnmower which may have been left out on our side of the garden. The step we were not aware of and has now been fixed. It is a shame you didn't make us aware at the time of your visit as any problems could easily have been addressed.

    We stayed as a group of 5 for one week in October. The house was lovely and had plenty of room for all of us. Having a downstairs bedroom is an advantage if staying with someone that cannot manage stairs very well. There is also room for parking up to 3 cars on the driveway. All in all we had a great stay and would highly recommend it to anyone. Only thing we found was that there is not enough power points so would be worth taking extension leads!

    The house was lovely and the owners very friendly and helpful. THe only gripes we had were the double mattress on the bed downstairs was very uncomfortable and dipped both sides which caused backache everyday and the hoover didn’t work properly and suck up so we found it hard to hoover the floors. If you use the cot you will need to bring bedding as none is provided. The beach is good for children and dogs were able to use the beach from 1st September onwards. There was coastal erosion but you could still get down to the beach fairly easily. Nearest supermarket was about 8 Miles away. Bridlington is the nearest large seaside town which was nice. Ulrome is a lovely quiet village so if your looking to relax it’s perfect

To clarify dogs are allowed on our local beach at all times of the year and information on this is provided in the guest compendium. With regards to cot bedding there are two reasons that we do not provide it, firstly due to the health and safety aspect and secondly we have found over the years that parents prefer to provide their own. Please accept our sincere apologies that the downstairs mattress was not to your liking but feel this is down to personal choice whether you prefer a softer or harder mattress. The mattress itself is in great conditions and meets our star rating criteria. We are delighted to let you know that our area representative visited us the week after your visit for our yearly inspection and that we passed with flying colours retaining our four star rating. Thank you once again for your comments and we hope to welcome you back to Avonlea in the future.

    We enjoyed staying here. But only used it as a base to visit other resorts. There was no shop in the village but fortunately we took lots of food etc.

    Needed more attention to detail with regards to cleanliness, oven, kitchen and sofa were dirty and the shower cubicle leaked over bathroom floor, meaning the grout was coming out of tiles making them loose. It would be useful to have a list of vets, doctors, hospitals and nearest pharmacy in the information guide and a list of dog walks, as our dog could only go out on lead in the garden, as it is shared with the owner of the property, this needs stating when booking.
