Auld Acquaintance Cottage sits in the heart of Ellisland Farm which was built by Robert Burns in 1788. Robert Burns, known affectionately as Rabbie Burns, was a Scottish poet and lyricist and widely regarded as the National Poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. Whilst Ellisland Farm remains much as it was then, Auld Acquaintance Cottage has been completely renovated in 2023 into a beautiful and modern holiday cottage. The large open plan living space with its cosy wood burner and beautifully fitted kitchen is a charming room with doors opening onto the garden and the River Nith beyond.
For the budding poet amongst you, yo can follow in the footsteps of Burns who was especially creative at Ellisland, writing a quarter of his songs and poems including Auld Lang Syne and Tam o’ Shanter. Wander the banks of the River Nith including the walk where he wrote Tam o’ Shanter. Next door to Auld Acquaintance Cottage is the farmhouse built by Burns where you can experience what life would have been like for a rural family in the 18th century through the extensive collection of artefacts, memorabilia and manuscripts. Whilst you can sit back and relax and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of Auld Acquaintance Cottage and Ellisland you are perfectly placed to enjoy the wonders of this beautiful region.
Enjoy a day out to the stunning Drumlanrig Castle where you can take a tour of the castle itself or just explore the miles of beautiful walks and gardens. There are numerous activities for kids, from the adventure playground to ranger-led wildlife walks. This lovely corner of southwest Scotland is known for its rugged beauty from beautiful sandy beaches and cliff top walks to forest trails. The Galloway Forest Park is an amazing place to visit where you can enjoy great walking in the rolling Galloway glens and hills with a breath-taking loch and mountain views, and as the UK’s first Dark Sky Park, one of the darkest places in the UK. Beach 19¾ miles.
