Description

This lovely farmhouse is great for larger groups of family or friends - it has two living rooms, and is perfect for touring Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and the Welsh Borders.

This Grade ll listed farmhouse offers great accommodation for large groups of friends and families to get together for those special celebrations or just sharing quality time, and is situated on a working farm that hosts various events throughout the year. This spacious farmhouse has two living rooms both with cosy open fires, and is perfectly placed for exploring Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and the Welsh Borders on the A48 between Chepstow and Gloucester. The Forest of Dean has an array of outdoor activities such as cycling, walking, riding, fishing, canoeing and kayaking on the River Wye. The cycling is suited for all abilities with an extensive network of stoned roads and paths, and for keen mountain bikers the downhill forest tracks provide wild opportunities with an excellent dedicated off-road area. There are walks with stunning scenery with access to Offa’s Dyke, The Gloucestershire Way, Wales Coast Path, The Sculpture Trail, The Wye Valley Walk and The Wysis Way. Geocaching is a world-wide activity often described as a ‘game of high-tech hide and seek’, and there are many caches in the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean. The area is popular for film sets from ’Star Wars’, ’Merlin’ and ’Harry Potter’ to name a few. Other attractions include Puzzlewood, Go Ape, the Dean Forest Railway, Dean Heritage Centre and Clearwell Caves. Drive-in cinema nights are available at the local diving centre and golf is available locally, with the world class Ryder Cup Course at the Celtic Manor within an hours’ drive. The towns of Gloucester, Ross-on-Wye, Monmouth and Abergavenny are all well worth visiting, with some of the market towns hosting various festivals, and the racecourses at Chepstow and Cheltenham are within easy driving. Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

Whilst the cottage was very comfortable and suitable for a large family gathering the close proximity to a very busy road was slightly off putting, and it is for this reason I personally would not book it again.

Brilliant place to stay. The house is spacious and well maintained. We had no idea how to use the Aga. We sat outside and inside. Big kitchen table - great for a group of 10. Beds were comfortable. The Lyon pub is a 2 minutes walk and has Delicious Triple Cooked Chips. They serve wine from smaller vineyards. National Trust Garden 1 minute away, 10 minute walk to the River Severn. Gloucester and Cheltenham near by.

The farm is in a beautiful location and very close to local amenities. Sadly the cleaning company hadn’t left us bath towels and both emergency numbers that were listed in the property didn’t pick up their phones on the Friday we arrived. They were turned off and went straight to answerphone. Thankfully someone answered on the Saturday morning and the towels were dropped off within the hour. There was a cracked glass pain in one of the back bedrooms which was quite sharp and dangerous. Thankfully it was my parents in that room and not any of the children. It really should be replaced. The other thing our group struggled with were the matresses. They were incredibly soft, roll into the middle, you can feel the springs, type matresses. Especially the double ones. I spent the weekend sleeping on the large sofa in the lounge. The matresses are either very old or not very good quality sadly. Also, the stairs felt a bit tricky in places. Like the wood was starting to rot under the carpet. It felt as though there was a little movement there and possible holes starting to appear. Obviously it’s a very old house and these things happen in older properties but it just may need some attention in case the stair does give way. The house itself is amazing though and with a few tweakes to make it more comfy and a little safer, it could be incredible.
