With a witch-shaped weathervane on the roof, this cottage is a great base from which to explore the Isle of Man.

Applegarth is a traditional, detached, stone-built Manx cottage, situated near the foot of Slieau Whallian (known as Witches Hill) in the conservation village of St. John’s. The cottage has reference to this still, with a weathervane on the roof shaped like a witch and numerous charms found in the stones of the building when it was renovated. The Isle of Man was once regarded as a hotbed of sorcery, witchcraft and magic. During the Reformation, any woman deemed to be a witch, accused of witchcraft, or spell making was taken up Slieau Whallian and put into a spiked barrel and rolled down from the top to the bottom, and often the barrel sunk into the bog. Many a long year there was a bare track down the mountainside, where it was reported that grass nor gorse would grow. They called this path the Witches Way, and local legend says that ghostly screams can be heard in the wind on certain nights of the year! Access to Slieau Whallian is via several footpaths, one of which is virtually across the road from the cottage. From the back garden patio, you can see across the river and fields to St John’s the Baptist Church, which is built on the site of an ancient chapel. You can also see Tynwald Hill, which is the assembly place for the Isle of Man parliament and which is reportedly the oldest and longest unbroken parliament in the world. Tynwald Day is held on the 5th July every year. There are a number of other attractions to visit on the island, including the Manx Aviation and Military Museum, Curraghs Wildlife Park, Castle Rushen and Laxey Wheel, the world’s largest working waterwheel. The owner of the property was very helpful when I spoke to him before and during our holiday. The cottage is in a very good location and is spacious with some nice decorative touches. There would seem to be a problem with local servicing, however. The cottage needs a thorough clean - there is dust everywhere and some areas were dirty when we arrived. For example, an empty kitchen cupboard had to be thoroughly cleaned before use due to sticky patches, food residue and dirt. There were wet tea towels hanging on the oven door and half-used cartons of milk in the fridge. There was no bath mat in the bathroom so it was difficult to keep the floor clean and dry. The utility room bench was scattered with dried food (dog biscuits perhaps?) and very dusty. I rolled up some rag rugs, which were badly stained, rather than walk on them. The bedding was clean enough, but a bit tired. The double bed was comfortable but one of the twin beds has missing/unstable lats (is that the right word? the wooden strips that go across the bedframe) and my son had to move onto the other bed during the week. I'm pretty sure, in my own mind, that this is not equivalent to other four star properties I've rented. This is mostly because of the cleaning issues (some of which I've described here). It felt more like an airbnb than a holiday cottage, in some ways - as if we were borrowing someone else's home for the week. Not really the standard I was expecting...

"Welcome to Applegarth, relax & make a cup of tea or coffee" as the information folder invites you to do, well we would have but for the fact tea bags seriously out of date, no milk, no welcome pack (included in the price). Okay, so lets light the multi-fuel burner in the lounge, no kindling, logs or coal (again included in the price!!) burner was full of ash hasn't been cleaned. The kitchen was dirty, worktops, wall tiles covered in grease. Dishwasher full of stagnant water, Oven contained the remnants of the previous occupiers grilled kippers, Microwave needed a good clean. Abundant cobwebs throughout the cottage. Garden untidy, unkempt. Wi-Fi is a joke slowest connection speed ever encountered. This property doesn't warrant it's 4 Star rating at all, it needs much more attention to cleanliness & general maintenance, a full list of issues will be sent to both who we booked through & Isle of Man Tourist Board who award the accommodation Star Ratings. We would come back to the Isle of Man, but not to this Cottage.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We are very upset with this review. We are investigating your claims thoroughly through the Tourist Board and the booking company who have been informed of all our findings. We provide tea / coffee / sugar / UHT milk which are located in the kitchen cupboard above the kettle. Also, dishwasher tabs, washing up liquid, bar soap, liquid hand soap and toilet rolls are located in the kitchen or bathroom cupboards. All dates are checked regularly. The gardener was unable to mow the grass the week you arrived due to heavy rainfall but the grass was mowed 8 days prior to your arrival. During our telephone call prior to your arrival, I did emphasise to contact myself or the booking agents if there was anything that you were not happy with as any issues would have been immediately taken care of as the maintenance team live only a few doors away from the cottage. The Booking Terms & Conditions ask guests to keep the property clean and tidy, and to leave the property in a similar condition as found upon arrival. Our cleaning company reported to us that the cottage had been left it in an unacceptable condition upon departure therefore extra cleaning was required to prepare the property for our next guests.
