A friendly greeting regularly welcomes visitors to Greenhaugh where a good pub serving food is a mere gentle stroll from Annie’s Cottage. Walkers and cyclists can enjoy circular routes from the cottage door, passing by wildflower meadows and bastles, and the wild and un-spoilt Border Reiver countryside of the Northumberland National Park. Star gazing enthusiasts will revel in the spectacular dark skies which can be viewed from the cottage (even from inside through a skylight), while the award winning Kielder Observatory is within easy reach. The picture postcard village of Bellingham is only 4.5 miles away and offers many local facilities, including a tourist office and heritage centre with a highly regarded 18-hole, par 70 golf course located on the cusp. The Woollen Mill at Otterburn is popular with visitors 8 miles east. Cycling, watersports and ferry trips are only a small sample of the outdoor activities that can be arranged at Kielder Water – Northern Europe’s largest man-made lake – which is cradled by Kielder Forest Park, nearby. The historic market town of Hexham, dominated by its majestic abbey offers a wide array of amenities and is well worth a visit. The World Heritage site of Hadrian’s Wall Country, England’s largest Heritage Site within this most northerly of National Parks, including the visito attractions of Vindolanda and Housesteads, is within easy driving distance. Annie’s Cottage makes an excellent base to explore the many delights across Northumberland and gives easy access to the Scottish Borders too.
