This property is part of our English Country Cottages collection

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Boasting fantastic facilities, this delightful barn conversion is fantastic for family gatherings or friends to get together.

Dating back to the 17th century, this barn conversion is set on a 100-acre, family-run working arable and livestock farm, alongside four other properties, just a few miles from Whitchurch. It has been lovingly and thoughtfully converted to offer very welcoming holiday accommodation, retaining many original features including exposed oak beams and trusses. The barn shares a multi-sports court for mini tennis, badminton and football, as well as a fantastic indoor heated swimming pool. The shared swimming pool is available for exclusive use for the five barns on-site and booking slots are available throughout the day, booked on your arrival. The swimming pool is open all year round but opening times may vary. A woodland picnic area lies a short walk away from your barn and there is a fantastic enclosed toddler play area available for children under 6 years. Walkers can explore the Shropshire Union Canal, just 5 minutes away, and the Shropshire Way footpath runs through the farm, while coarse fishing is less than 5 miles and horse riding 1½ miles away. For cyclists, the Mercian Cycle Path runs past the farm. Whilst the barns enjoy a peaceful rural setting, they are still very close to amenities. Whitchurch is approximately 2½ miles away, the delightful market town has many splendid buildings from medieval, Tudor and Georgian times, all dominated by St. Alkmund’s Church. Internationally renowned for its clock production dating back to the 1650s, Whitchurch is known as ’the Home of Tower Clocks’, and a fine example can be seen on one of the barns. There are many excellent shops, pubs and restaurants in the town which is perfectly placed for touring all of Shropshire, North Wales and Cheshire. Attractions close by include Ellesmere with its beautiful lakes, 11 miles, a variety of National Trust mansions and gardens, and the historical city of Chester with its excellent shopping and famous races, 25 miles, with the Blue Planet Aquarium close by. Chester Zoo, as seen on TV’s ’Secret Life of a Zoo’, is only 30 minutes away and is one of Europe’s largest zoos, helping endangered animals from all over the world. Other places of interest include Hawkstone Follies, Cheshire Ice Cream Farm, RAF Cosford, Fenn’s and Whixall Mosses, and the incredible Ironbridge Gorge. Shop and restaurant 2 miles, pub approx 1 mile.

We needed a large cottage for my family to attend a nephew's wedding at Hawkestone Park. There was my wife & I, our three adult daughters and their partners, and a total of five grandchildren ranging from 8 years down to 3 months. James's Parlour is ideal - has bags of room, a huge kitchen diner, it's child friendly - stairgates, cots etc. Thank you Emma and James, we really enjoyed our long weekend.

Lovely homely environment for family celebration of 70th and 21st birthdays. Nice, comfortable, open kitchen and lounge space. We had a peaky blinders fancy dress party! Small fun swimming pool (too much chlorine) and good sports court for football and tennis.

We - eight adults and six children (1 - 12) spent a very enjoyable week at James Parlour. It’s very well-equipped and comfortably furnished, and we all commented well- soundproofed too! Stairgates are fitted for little ones and the pool and playground were great. You can book for your own sessions which is good as the pool is not huge. The barn looks better than the photos in my opinion. Just one thing - if you often use a hand blender for cooking take one with you as there are no kitchen ‘power tools’ but other than that it’s ideal for a family gathering.

Super property, lots of space and so clean and tidy. Kitchen well equipped, great for a big group and lots of stuff for kids ie plastic plates etc The pool just made our stay, it was super, warm and using it to ourselves was a real treat! Owners very helpful and location so pretty, we will be back in 2019!

Fantastic cottage, just perfect for our large mixed age group. So much space downstairs and all bedrooms beautifully clean and very comfortable. The swimming pool was such a treat, so lovely for us to use just to ourselves, so used it everyday, the children loved it and so did the adults!!! The games court was well used too and we all enjoyed a game of football and badminton for the first time in years. Our cottage had a very large enclosed garden with a patio, so the little ones could run around outside safely, whilst we relaxed on the patio. Views all around us were lovely. The cottage is perfect for a large group the open plan kitchen is very well equipped, with everything you need from saucepans to a rolling pin. The dining area is lovely and the sitting area makes the cottages very inclusive. We all enjoyed watching a film together, whilst some of us cooked without feeling left out!!! Everywhere is beautifully clean and tidy. I cant fault the owners, as we arrived after a last minute booking they were exceptionally helpful and gave us great ideas for days out, which we ended up doing. We had an amazing day at Chester Zoo, definelty recommend it, so much to see there. The local market town is so pretty, has lots of great independent shops and cafes, bars and also Tesco's, Sainsburys and Lidl, which is very useful. We will be going back as all the family had such a wonderful time catching up on missed months apart. Great value for money especially with our large group.

The description of the property is accurate but the pool is tiny. One of the double rooms upstairs is very very small with only a skylight my son and his wife could not get their things in it and had to leave bags on the landing. The downstairs room is well decorated and comfortable and is spotlessly clean. It is a lovely room but has a deary view as has the outdoor seating area. Coffee, tea, milk, sugar and cleaning materials were provided The downstairs bedroom has a high sided bath with a shower over it, I did not read this carefully enough and wrongly assumed there would be a shower. As I am a stroke survivor and can climb a step into the property but I am not able to climb into a high sided bath so others booking the property need to read the description more carefully than I did, as there is no other shower. I was left with a wash basin only to wash in. Usually the down stairs bedroom has a shower so that those who cannot climb stairs can wash. The mistake was entirely mine.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for marking us 10 out of 10 for our cleanliness it is something which we pay a lot of attention to. However, we do find your other comments very upsetting, as during our communication with you prior to your booking, we advised you that our cottage is not advertised as having a downstairs standalone shower and so we were surprised when you booked with us. There is a shower upstairs and in your bathroom a shower over the bath, if you had contacted us we could have supplied you with a step to help you in. Also there is a full size shower with ground floor access in the swimming pool and we could have given you additional access to the pool if you had spoken to us. Also after further discussions with it is “not usual for the downstairs bathroom to have a shower in it if there is a downstairs bedroom”. We give the dimensions of the swimming pool on the website along with photographs and the pool is enjoyed by all of our guests. We find the fact that guests can use the pool exclusively is a highlight of many peoples holiday. The games court is advertised as such and again there are photographs showing the court, it is suitable for mini tennis/football/badminton etc. and so many families of mixed generations enjoy playing together during their stay with us. There is a photograph of the double room you mention on the website and surely you must appreciate that as this is a barn conversion and we have kept many of the original features, which keeps it character, which many of our guests appreciate. We don’t understand the low scoring of location and facilities , as we have on site a swimming pool, games court, Toddler play area, BBQ’s, woodland picnic site and farm walks, all of which are included in the price. The cottage also has a very large enclosed garden and patio area with furniture. Locally we have a huge variety of places to visit, which again most of our guests enjoy very much, these include, Park Hall Farm, Chester Zoo, Hawkstone Park, Iron Bridge to name but a few and the beautiful local market town of Whitchurch is filled with cafes, bars, restaurants and lots of lovely shops. As we advised you, our wonderful site was not the place for you and we really wish you had taken our advice, as we feel such a poor score does not fairly reflect the cottage and our wonderful facilities and the stunning location that we are in. We feel our other reviews give a more balanced view of the property.
