The cottage was built in 1835 as a hunting Lodge but was occupied by its owner until about 60 years ago, after which the forest slowly reclaimed it. Until a few months ago all you could see were the chimney tops through the trees but gentle landscaping has once again revealed this magical little place, and thoughtful restoration has maintained its rustic charm. It now offers an experience of a bygone lifestyle - but with a few modern conveniences thrown in.
It’s hard to put the atmosphere of this place into words, it radiates a certain stillness and the absence of bright modern colours and ornaments adds to the feeling that you have stepped back in time.
The cottage comfortably sleeps four people, yet it’s not too big for a romantic break and is a great retreat for anyone needing to be alone for something like a writing project. Set on its own out in woodlands and with its own hot-tub it’s certainly a good choice for a ’get away from it all’ break.
Maddle Brook Safari (QU7052) can be booked with Mrs Higgs Lodge (QU7062), River Orchard Family Retreat (QU7064) & The Officer’s Hideaway (QU7435) to accommodate up to 18 guests.

The lodge is idyllic. The information you get about this lodge is a little sparse and your overall feeling is that you are unprepared for the stay. Turning up in the pitch black is challenging in winter it should be adviseable to turn up in the daylight this would help with your orientation. When we arrived the bulb in the main stairwell was broken. It was lazy not to have had this replaced before we turned up given the treacherous steepness of the stairs. However the infestation of wasps that had obviously been settled in the lodge for some time and which rendered it uninhabitable was the main reason that we left after one distressing night of no sleep and multiple dead wasps. The hot tub took 6 hours to warm up.

I loved this quirky little cottage - we were blessed with unseasonal October warmth so most of the time spent outside.Had there been 4 of us ( just two) there would not have been enough seating by the fire in the sitting room; sofa only really big enough for 2 adults but there is plenty of space to put a couple of small armchairs in there. The hot tub was a delight; sitting under the stars listening to owls hooting. My sis and I had such an exciting adventure; not for the nervous and it helps to know forest noises at night! Very comfortable bed, lovely soft bedding and slept so well despite going to bed at 9pm. I loved it and will be back to immerse myself in nature and all her delights.
