There are few places which evoke as much passion as the Yorkshire Dales. They have inspired writers such as Frances Hodgson Burnett, Philip Larkin, Ted Hughes and, of course, the Bronte sisters – and it’s easy to see why. The dales are stunningly beautiful, endlessly rolling across the horizon and studded with rustic farmhouses, grazing cattle and jagged rock formations. The walking trails are famous around the world, and many experienced hikers choose to stay in a cottage with a pool for easier access to routes such as the Three Peaks (Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside) or the Pennine Way (which runs from Craven to Malham in the Dales). For novice walkers, follow the gentle paths of the Dales Way, where you will spot lime kilns and Bronze Age ruins as well as beautiful views of the surrounding meadows.
Cottages with private pools also make the perfect base for foodie tours of the Dales. Choose a cottage in the countryside and spend your driving around the traditional villages of Yorkshire and Cumbria – don’t miss Cowgill near Dent, one of the most remote breweries in the UK and producers of some of the country’s best ale; and of course no trip to Yorkshire is complete without a trip to Hawes, the home of Wensleydale cheese. For a taste of the local history, choose a cottage with a swimming pool near Skipton, with its 900-year-old castle, or the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Saltaire, with its impressive salt mills.
A cottage with a pool in the Yorkshire Dales opens up a whole raft of possibilities. Explore the area on foot, by bike, by car or even on horseback, or simply luxuriate in the peace and quiet of your own rural retreat, venturing no further than the local pub for a pint of ale and a hearty pie.
