The 1,500 mile journey can be split into 6 sections, from north to south, the Northern Headlands, the Surf Coast, the Bay Coast, the Cliff Coast, Southern Peninsulas and the Haven Coast, so a great excuse to plan several holidays. No matter how you do the route you’ll be delighted at the spectacular scenery all along the coast and the best way to enjoy your holiday is to stay in one of our cottage rentals on the Wild Atlantic Way, you’ll return home with lasting memories and feel as though you have experienced the unique Irish way of life.
In County Donegal you’ll see sheer cliffs, glaciated valleys and visit vibrant Irish speaking towns and villages. Scattered between Malin Head and Donegal Town are prehistoric sites to discover, take time to explore the town, at the mouth of the River Eske, which boasts a castle, heritage railway and seal colony in the bay.
The coast of County Sligo and County Mayo is famous for its surf as well as remote islands, history and legends. The miles of open road take you through some of the best scenery on the route and as Mayo meets County Galway you arrive at the Bay Coast peppered with rural villages, beaches, hidden coves and offshore islands. You’ll find a plethora of artists, musicians and storytellers enjoying this inspirational outdoor paradise.
In County Clare, County Galway and County Kerry you’ll encounter breath-taking cliffs to peer over and between Galway and Ballybunion is an area filled with inspiration and natural wonders you’ll never tire of seeing.
Further south the rugged stretched out arm of County Kerry joins with West Cork’s woodlands and outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking, coasteering and kayaking. At its most southerly the Wild Atlantic Way finishes on the delightful coast of County Cork, a great place to relax, unwind and sample some traditional food and drink.
