Holiday cottages in Wales offer a fantastic mix of beautiful landscapes and vibrant cities. One day you could be enjoying the unrivalled tranquillity and expansive views of Snowdonia, and the next you could be joining the throng at Cardiff’s majestic Millennium Stadium. To borrow a well-worn phrase, Wales truly is a destination with something for everyone. The only problem with so much choice is finding the right thing for you and your fellow holidaymakers to enjoy, so we’re going to make a few recommendations for an unforgettable holiday in Wales.

Wales really is a country of highlights, with an incredible array of fantastic attractions, both natural and man-made. One of the best ways to get your bearings is to head upwards, so we’re going to recommend a trip to Snowdonia National Park first. If you’d like a bird’s eye view of your stunning surroundings there really is no place like it. The circular Precipice Walk offers a slightly challenging two-hour trek but the pay off is expansive views as far as the eye can see. Mount Snowdon is easily accessible thanks to a train ride, or a climb for more intrepid visitors. However you choose to reach it, the views from the surrounding landscape are breathtaking. Less taxing, but no less beautiful, is the Pembrokeshire Coast. The UK's only truly coastal national park offers stunning limestone cliffs, soft golden sands and cool blue waters as far as the eye can see. Wales’ industrial heritage is celebrated at the Llechwedd Slate Caverns. One of the country’s premier tourist attractions, it offers both a fascinating insight into the lives of the miners and a truly unique landscape to explore and admire. If you fancy a more vibrant holiday experience then there are few better locations than Cardiff. Like Wales itself, the capital city offers a wonderful celebration of history and a wealth of contemporary attractions, so it’s perhaps unsurprising to find out that it’s also one of the most popular destinations for those with Welsh holiday cottages.

A beautifully varied landscape makes Welsh cottages perennially popular with outdoor enthusiasts and those who fancy enjoying the fresh air and stunning spectacle of some of the UK’s most celebrated natural locations. The Conwy Valley takes you down towards Betws-y-Coed, the ‘gateway to Snowdonia’. On the way, call in at Bodnant Garden (NT) that is abundant with floral colour, or for a bit of foodie heaven, try the Bodnant Welsh Food Centre.

Also adjacent is the RSPB bird hide, a great place for watching birds out on the estuary. If you can bear to tear yourself away from this perfect location, the market town of Dolgellau and the beaches of Barmouth and Fairbourne are well worth a visit, as are the nearby Fairbourne Railway and Talyllyn Railway.     Great Cantal Granary, converted to detached holiday accommodation, was built in early Victorian times as the grain store for the adjoining Great Cantal Mill, which itself dates back to the 17th century. The mill, which last operated in the late 1940s, had a wooden overshot mill wheel on its east wall, powered by water from the River Aran. The mill served as the ’court mill’ for the parish: local farmers brought their grain to Great Cantal, where it was stored in the Granary until it was milled, with the miller retaining some of the flour as payment for the milling. Most of the mill machinery had been removed by the 1980s but one of the bedstones, made of French burr stone, dating from about 1830 and weighing over a ton, was still in place when the present owners, already resident in the old farmhouse opposite, acquired the Mill and Granary a few years ago. This bedstone was carefully removed and is now on display at Talgarth Mill, which is about 30 miles away, between Hay on Wye and Brecon. Since 1989, the Granary, Mill and Farmhouse have been in separate ownership to the farm. A network of tracks crosses the farm, giving easy access to Maelienydd and Little Hill Commons. Overlooking the farm to the north is Beacon Hill Common, 5000 acres of open moorland across which runs Glyndwr’s Way, a long distance footpath running from Knighton to Machynlleth. All three commons are access land on which there is the right to roam.
    The River Aran, which rises on Beacon Hill and flows down through Great Cantal to join the River Ithon near Penybont, and thence the Wye a little north of Builth Wells, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a European Special Area of Conservation, where a variety of wildlife can be found. The owner has fishing rights for 3½ miles on the River Ithon which is located a 25-minute drive away (£10pw, licence required). Maelienydd, itself a SSSI, is a breeding ground for redshank and curlew and Beacon Hill still hosts the rare ring ouzel, as well as red grouse. One of Radnorshire Wildlife Trust’s nature reserves, Tylcau Hill, lies about 2 miles from the Granary and is open to visitors all year round. The spa town of Llandrindod Wells is 15 miles. Shop 8 miles, pub and restaurant 4½ miles.

A short drive from Tenby brings you to the medieval Pembroke Castle which is steeped in history and is perched overlooking the River Cleddau or further south visit the National Trust site of Bosherston Lilly Ponds or for the more adventurous try your hand at rock climbing over the cliffs of Stackpole.
