Holiday cottages in Wales offer a fantastic mix of beautiful landscapes and vibrant cities. One day you could be enjoying the unrivalled tranquillity and expansive views of Snowdonia, and the next you could be joining the throng at Cardiff’s majestic Millennium Stadium. The only problem with so much choice is finding the right thing for you and your fellow holidaymakers to enjoy, so we’re going to make a few recommendations for an unforgettable holiday in Wales.

Wales really is a country of highlights, with an incredible array of fantastic attractions, both natural and man-made. One of the best ways to get your bearings is to head upwards, so we’re going to recommend a trip to Snowdonia National Park first. If you’d like a bird’s eye view of your stunning surroundings there really is no place like it. The circular Precipice Walk offers a slightly challenging two-hour trek but the pay off is expansive views as far as the eye can see. Mount Snowdon is easily accessible thanks to a train ride, or a climb for more intrepid visitors. However you choose to reach it, the views from the surrounding landscape are breathtaking. Less taxing, but no less beautiful, is the Pembrokeshire Coast. The UK's only truly coastal national park offers stunning limestone cliffs, soft golden sands and cool blue waters as far as the eye can see. Wales’ industrial heritage is celebrated at the Llechwedd Slate Caverns. One of the country’s premier tourist attractions, it offers both a fascinating insight into the lives of the miners and a truly unique landscape to explore and admire. If you fancy a more vibrant holiday experience then there are few better locations than Cardiff. Like Wales itself, the capital city offers a wonderful celebration of history and a wealth of contemporary attractions, so it’s perhaps unsurprising to find out that it’s also one of the most popular destinations for those with Welsh holiday cottages.

Also adjacent is the RSPB bird hide, a great place for watching birds out on the estuary. If you can bear to tear yourself away from this perfect location, the market town of Dolgellau and the beaches of Barmouth and Fairbourne are well worth a visit, as are the nearby Fairbourne Railway and Talyllyn Railway. In days gone by, a shepherd’s hut wouldn’t have had the luxury of electricity or showers, but Ty Bach has both, and at one end of the hut, you’ll find an en-suite shower room with an eco-toilet. Electricity is provided by means of a battery and solar panels, so there are lights, a double socket and 12-volt power point. With no TV or Wi-Fi, there’s nothing to distract guests from getting back to nature in this most tranquil setting. The owners live adjacent, so help is always at hand. In the nearby shed you’ll find a large insulated cool box that the owner will keep cool with fresh ice blocks, so that your provisions, wine and beer will stay chilled throughout your stay. With a barbecue and garden furniture, guests can enjoy dining al-fresco style, whilst admiring the beautiful surroundings.


    If you can drag yourself away from Ty Bach, guests are advised to explore the beautiful county of Powys. The area is a paradise for outdoorsy types with walking, cycling and mountain biking, canoeing, fishing and horse riding available nearby. Delve into the rich history of Wales’ last prince, Llewellyn, who was killed near Builth in 1282. Today the interesting market town, which is just 8 miles away, hosts Wales’ famous Royal Agricultural Show in July annually, along with other shows and fairs throughout the year. Also nearby are the historic, vibrant towns of Rhayader and Llandrindod Wells, with their independent shops, cafes and restaurants. There’s also the spectacularly stunning Elan Valley Dams, 500² miles of breathtaking scenery in the Brecon Beacons National Park, and Hay-on-Wye, which is cited as the ‘second-hand book capital of the world’. Away from the resort, the gourmet town of Saundersfoot is well worth a visit, as are the numerous historic sites dotted around the county including Manorbier, Carew and Pembroke castles.
