Holiday cottages in Wales offer a fantastic mix of beautiful landscapes and vibrant cities. One day you could be enjoying the unrivalled tranquillity and expansive views of Snowdonia, and the next you could be joining the throng at Cardiff’s majestic Millennium Stadium. To borrow a well-worn phrase, Wales truly is a destination with something for everyone. The only problem with so much choice is finding the right thing for you and your fellow holidaymakers to enjoy, so we’re going to make a few recommendations for an unforgettable holiday in Wales.

Wales really is a country of highlights, with an incredible array of fantastic attractions, both natural and man-made. One of the best ways to get your bearings is to head upwards, so we’re going to recommend a trip to Snowdonia National Park first. If you’d like a bird’s eye view of your stunning surroundings there really is no place like it. The circular Precipice Walk offers a slightly challenging two-hour trek but the pay off is expansive views as far as the eye can see. Mount Snowdon is easily accessible thanks to a train ride, or a climb for more intrepid visitors. However you choose to reach it, the views from the surrounding landscape are breathtaking. Less taxing, but no less beautiful, is the Pembrokeshire Coast. The UK's only truly coastal national park offers stunning limestone cliffs, soft golden sands and cool blue waters as far as the eye can see. Wales’ industrial heritage is celebrated at the Llechwedd Slate Caverns. One of the country’s premier tourist attractions, it offers both a fascinating insight into the lives of the miners and a truly unique landscape to explore and admire. If you fancy a more vibrant holiday experience then there are few better locations than Cardiff. Like Wales itself, the capital city offers a wonderful celebration of history and a wealth of contemporary attractions, so it’s perhaps unsurprising to find out that it’s also one of the most popular destinations for those with Welsh holiday cottages.

A beautifully varied landscape makes Welsh cottages perennially popular with outdoor enthusiasts and those who fancy enjoying the fresh air and stunning spectacle of some of the UK’s most celebrated natural locations. Hikers, climbers, cyclists and boaters will all find much to enjoy in the ‘Land of Song’.     Arch Cottage lies in a quiet side street in the centre of pretty Llanidloes, which was once the heart of the ancient medieval kingdom of Arwystli. It is the first town on the River Severn and is an ideal spot to take a short break or longer holiday. Easy to reach, Llanidloes is situated only a 2-hour drive from Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Cardiff, with the national rail network running close by. Yet ’Llani’ as it is often referred to locally, is far away from hustle and bustle of modern life and the perfect place to relax amidst some of the most unspoilt and undiscovered scenery Wales has to offer, surrounded by soft mountain scenery which makes it very popular with wildlife enthusiasts and hikers. The Celtic Saint Idloes laid the foundations of a church on table land overlooking the Severn and today the layout of wide streets formed in the shape of a cross form the heart of the town. The Old Market Hall, the only half timbered hall of its kind in Wales and still in its original position, was constructed on the centre of the cross in the early 1600s. Llanidloes has an array of interesting independent shops, cafes and no less than nine pubs, so no shortage of places to eat and drink. There are over 30 separate walking routes and national trails around the town which are clearly marked and signposted. They link Llanidloes with the smaller surrounding villages of Llangurig, Llandinam and Trefeglwys and range from just a few miles to a good day’s walk. Many of the roads and tracks around the town are ideal for cyclists and the Lon Cambrian Sustrans routes pass through the town. In this beautiful Mid Wales region you will find castles, country houses & gardens, wildlife and nature reserves, small market towns, lakes, mountains and the beaches of the Ceredigion coastline are within easy reach.     Gerlan is a quaint town cottage built around 1866 sometime after the railway arrived in Tregaron. Tregaron was once a very strategic point for taking animals from the farms in West Wales to markets in England. Before the railways, it is said around 30,000 animals were escorted overland on drovers’ roads through the Cambrian Mountains. The trading importance of the town was such that it even had its own ’Black Sheep Aberystwyth and Tregaron Bank’, and the number of black sheep engraved on the bank notes issued indicated the number of pounds value.

    The Cambrian Mountains are one of the few remote areas left in southern Britain, and Tregaron lies close to this wild open wilderness. Although there are only few roads across the mountains they are acknowledged as some of the most scenic routes in Britain and walkers and cyclists revel in the peaceful solitude.

    The current owners of Gerlan have lovingly restored the property so that it now provides the perfect base to discover this wonderful part of Wales. The ground floor has a country kitchen leading into a spacious living and dining room, and an attractive stone fireplace with a wood burning stove so that you can be cosy year round. A ground floor bathroom and two first floor bedrooms complete this quaint cottage.

    Today, historic Tregaron is a ’Walkers are Welcome’ town, and the annual walking festival held in May is a firm favourite on the walking calendar. Competitors and visitors come from all over the UK and Ireland for the annual horse trotting and carriage racing too. It is also the home of the Welsh Gold Centre, selling Celtic inspired designs.

    The town is small and has a friendly village atmosphere. A short stroll will bring you to independent shops, and on the square, the award winning pub and restaurant, the renowned Talbot Hotel. Also standing proudly on the square is a wood carving depicting Twm Siôn Cati, the legendary 17th-century ’Robin Hood of Wales’ who is said to have used his wit and bravery to outsmart gentry and crooks alike.

    Cors Caron, or Tregaron Bog as it is also known, is the largest raised bog in Britain and lies just outside the town. It is a peat bog of international importance and a nature reserve since 1955. It provides a habitat to very rare flora and fauna and is fantastic for wildlife spotting, including buzzards, peregrine falcons, harriers and iconic red kites.

    The beautiful Ceredigion coastline can be reached within 30 minutes drive and offers lovely beaches (many dog friendly year round), and interesting towns and villages to visit. The university town of Aberystwyth has a historic castle, long promenade and pier, plus it is home to one of Wales’ most picturesque steam train journeys through the valley over to Devil’s Bridge. Georgian harbour town Aberaeron, and quaint fishing town of New Quay, are also great places to go for restaurants, shops, boat rides and dolphin spotting.
