Holiday cottages in Wales offer a fantastic mix of beautiful landscapes and vibrant cities. One day you could be enjoying the unrivalled tranquillity and expansive views of Snowdonia, and the next you could be joining the throng at Cardiff’s majestic Millennium Stadium. To borrow a well-worn phrase, Wales truly is a destination with something for everyone. The only problem with so much choice is finding the right thing for you and your fellow holidaymakers to enjoy, so we’re going to make a few recommendations for an unforgettable holiday in Wales.

Wales really is a country of highlights, with an incredible array of fantastic attractions, both natural and man-made. One of the best ways to get your bearings is to head upwards, so we’re going to recommend a trip to Snowdonia National Park first. If you’d like a bird’s eye view of your stunning surroundings there really is no place like it. The circular Precipice Walk offers a slightly challenging two-hour trek but the pay off is expansive views as far as the eye can see. Mount Snowdon is easily accessible thanks to a train ride, or a climb for more intrepid visitors. However you choose to reach it, the views from the surrounding landscape are breathtaking. Less taxing, but no less beautiful, is the Pembrokeshire Coast. The UK's only truly coastal national park offers stunning limestone cliffs, soft golden sands and cool blue waters as far as the eye can see. Wales’ industrial heritage is celebrated at the Llechwedd Slate Caverns. One of the country’s premier tourist attractions, it offers both a fascinating insight into the lives of the miners and a truly unique landscape to explore and admire. If you fancy a more vibrant holiday experience then there are few better locations than Cardiff. Like Wales itself, the capital city offers a wonderful celebration of history and a wealth of contemporary attractions, so it’s perhaps unsurprising to find out that it’s also one of the most popular destinations for those with Welsh holiday cottages.

Historic Conwy is just a few minutes by car and offers the mighty Edward I Conwy Castle and town walls (A World Heritage Site), Aberconwy House, Conwy Suspension Bridge (NT), Plas Mawr (Cadw), a wealth of quirky individual shops, and the quay where fresh fish is landed daily. The Conwy Valley takes you down towards Betws-y-Coed, the ‘gateway to Snowdonia’. On the way, call in at Bodnant Garden (NT) that is abundant with floral colour, or for a bit of foodie heaven, try the Bodnant Welsh Food Centre.

There is a wealth of attractions, activities and events to ensure you’re never stuck for ideas of how to have a great time whatever the weather. Take a walk along the Ceredigion Heritage Coast Path to get the most spectacular views of the coastline, visit Aberystwyth with its pier and promenade, the unique electric cliff railway to the summit of Constitution Hill, or travel on a steam train to Devil’s Bridge, home to the Mynach Falls. The historic market town of Tregaron is six miles away and is situated at the southern end of an expanse of raised bog – Cors Caron, which you can walk through via a series of boardwalks. The elegant Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron, 11 miles, and picturesque New Quay, 18 miles, are well worth a visit and dolphin survey boat trips are available in season. There are plenty of sandy beaches including all year round dog friendly ones; some of the most spectacular stretches of golden beach can be seen at Borth, Ynyslas and Clarach, five miles north of Aberystwyth.

The bridge was built in 1879 across the tidal Mawddach Estuary at Penmaenpool, and this unique holiday home offers a remarkably spacious interior. The toll bridge is still in use today, linking the coastal towns of Tywyn and Barmouth in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park. There is a lovely little balcony on the opposite side of the bridge – the perfect place to sip a glass of wine and enjoy watching a sunset. The famous George III Hotel is adjacent to the bridge and serves delicious, locally sourced food and a selection of real ales. The Mawddach Trail walking and cycle path passes the door, and follows the route of the old railway line from Dolgellau to Barmouth; cycle hire is available in both Dolgellau and Barmouth. Also adjacent is the RSPB bird hide, a great place for watching birds out on the estuary. If you can bear to tear yourself away from this perfect location, the market town of Dolgellau and the beaches of Barmouth and Fairbourne are well worth a visit, as are the nearby Fairbourne Railway and Talyllyn Railway.
