Powys

Powys is a tranquil and peaceful county situated in Mid Wales. The county is mostly made up of smaller towns and villages and has plenty of rural space for the ultimate quiet getaway.

Though Powys is a quiet and relaxing place to spend a holiday, this doesn''t mean there is a lack of things to do while you''re there. It is the largest county in Wales, hosting plenty of attractions. For example, there are a number of cave systems located in Powys, including some of the most extensive in Wales. Various tours allow you to explore these caves for yourself and to see the unique and awe-inspiring beauty of these natural formations.

If you have an interest in history, you will have no trouble filling the time while holidaying in Powys. The area now covered by Powys includes five historic counties, giving it a varied past which today has given birth to plenty of heritage sites and other attractions. For instance, there are six castles within Powys''s borders. These range from Aberedw Castle, which lies in ruins, to Powis Castle, which still stands as a grand and imposing country manor. The county also has a number of museums, including Brecknock Museum, which hosts artefacts dating back as far as the Stone Age and occupies a Grade II listed building.

Nonetheless, the quiet rural beauty of Powys is one of the biggest draws, and this itself provides visitors with plenty to do. In most parts of the county the scenic walks are absolutely delightful. There are several wonderful set walks and trails in the county which provide excellent views of local scenery and of nature.

For those looking to take in the beauty of nature but wanting something more spectacular, the breathtaking lakes and waterfalls make for ideal sightseeing. A number of scenic lakes can be found in Powys. The amazing waterfalls, meanwhile, include the mighty Pistyll y Llyn, which is one of the highest in Wales.

The “Middleton Arms” as it became, was owned by landowners whose seat was at Llyn Parriad and later it changed its name to the “Vulcan Arms” in homage to the Vulcan God of Fire, god of the blacksmiths. It sits on the old Cambrian railway line and was an important hostelry for those using Doldowlod Halt station until the line was closed in the 1960’s. Today the holiday cottage offers every modern comfort whilst still retaining the best features of the old inn. Searle is an end-terraced cottage which is spacious and characterful. It offers easy access to the A470 via a slip road; Sustrans cycle routes, the River Wye which is right on the doorstep, Wye Valley Walks and the Red Kite Centre. A very short walk from the apartment will bring you to a shop, post office and café. A stop for buses to Llandrindod Wells and Rhayader is nearby.

    The town of Rhayader is 7 minutes drive away and the area is home to the spectacular dams and reservoirs of the Elan and Claerwen Valleys. There are events on throughout the year and this is the perfect base for the whole family to experience stunning outdoor attractions including fishing, and discover rich and rare wildlife in the rolling Cambrian Mountains.

    Great Cantal Granary, converted to detached holiday accommodation, was built in early Victorian times as the grain store for the adjoining Great Cantal Mill, which itself dates back to the 17th century. The mill, which last operated in the late 1940s, had a wooden overshot mill wheel on its east wall, powered by water from the River Aran. The mill served as the ’court mill’ for the parish: local farmers brought their grain to Great Cantal, where it was stored in the Granary until it was milled, with the miller retaining some of the flour as payment for the milling. Most of the mill machinery had been removed by the 1980s but one of the bedstones, made of French burr stone, dating from about 1830 and weighing over a ton, was still in place when the present owners, already resident in the old farmhouse opposite, acquired the Mill and Granary a few years ago. This bedstone was carefully removed and is now on display at Talgarth Mill, which is about 30 miles away, between Hay on Wye and Brecon. Since 1989, the Granary, Mill and Farmhouse have been in separate ownership to the farm. A network of tracks crosses the farm, giving easy access to Maelienydd and Little Hill Commons. Overlooking the farm to the north is Beacon Hill Common, 5000 acres of open moorland across which runs Glyndwr’s Way, a long distance footpath running from Knighton to Machynlleth. All three commons are access land on which there is the right to roam.
    The River Aran, which rises on Beacon Hill and flows down through Great Cantal to join the River Ithon near Penybont, and thence the Wye a little north of Builth Wells, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a European Special Area of Conservation, where a variety of wildlife can be found. The owner has fishing rights for 3½ miles on the River Ithon which is located a 25-minute drive away (£10pw, licence required). Maelienydd, itself a SSSI, is a breeding ground for redshank and curlew and Beacon Hill still hosts the rare ring ouzel, as well as red grouse. One of Radnorshire Wildlife Trust’s nature reserves, Tylcau Hill, lies about 2 miles from the Granary and is open to visitors all year round. The spa town of Llandrindod Wells is 15 miles. Shop 8 miles, pub and restaurant 4½ miles.

    If you can drag yourself away from Ty Bach, guests are advised to explore the beautiful county of Powys. The area is a paradise for outdoorsy types with walking, cycling and mountain biking, canoeing, fishing and horse riding available nearby. Delve into the rich history of Wales’ last prince, Llewellyn, who was killed near Builth in 1282. Today the interesting market town, which is just 8 miles away, hosts Wales’ famous Royal Agricultural Show in July annually, along with other shows and fairs throughout the year. Also nearby are the historic, vibrant towns of Rhayader and Llandrindod Wells, with their independent shops, cafes and restaurants.
