Welshpool

Close to the English border, on the banks of the River Severn, the historic town of Welshpool is a popular holiday destination and ideal for exploring the beautiful rolling countryside of this border region. A place for finding medieval castles and an abundance of wonderful outdoor activities.

Close by is Powis Castle, a 13th Century sandstone castle that overlooks the stunning Severn Valley. With its red sandstone walls and impeccable landscaped gardens, the castle is a sight to behold, and visitors can easily spend a leisurely day exploring the building, its grounds and the museum that houses treasures bought back from India in years gone by.

Welshpool boasts many fine examples of historical architecture and the church, built in 6th Century, the Dolobran Quaker Meeting House built in 1701 and the 18th Century six-sided cock pit are all well worth visiting. For an insight into the archaeological and social history of the area visit the Powysland Museum. Families and adults alike will also enjoy a trip on the historical narrow gauge stream train on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway.

Follow the Heritage Trail, a walk that takes you past some 20 places of interest in and around the town. Each location has a plaque giving information about the attraction’s background and history. For longer walks, there are a number of national walking trails running through the region and cyclists will also be able to explore the town and its surroundings.

Other activities include fishing, golf, quad biking and horse riding.
