Newtown

The market town of Newtown is situated on the River Severn, surrounded by beautiful rural Welsh countryside. It grew in importance in the nineteenth century when the wool industry expanded, as evidenced by the impressive Flannel Exchange, once an important trading centre but now houses the Regent Cinema.

Newtown has plenty for the visitor to see and do. The Oriel Davies Gallery is an important venue for visual arts, with many interesting exhibitions as well as regular courses and workshops. The cafe, with its views over the town to the hills, is a popular meeting place that extends out on to the terrace in the summer months. As the largest town in Powys, Newtown has all the shops and facilities you will need close at hand.

There are plenty of footpaths in the area for the keen walkers and The Severn Way is nearby. In addition there are also some lovely nature reserves and canal paths to discover.

A trip on the Cambrian Coast Railway from Newtown to Machynlleth and as far as Barmouth or Harlech offers lovely views of the coast and countryside. Wales is famous for its castles and just eleven miles from Newtown, you will find Montgomery Castle, providing spectacular views from its hilltop position. The town of Montgomery is also very attractive, lying just a mile from the border with England.

At Machynlleth is the Centre for Alternative Technology. For anyone interested in sustainability, this is a fascinating place to visit, with working examples of environmentally positive solutions and organic gardens, as well as an adventure playground, cafe and shop.
