Find cottages in Llandrindod Wells

As the name suggests, Llandrindod Wells is strongly associated with the natural health giving spa waters which were first discovered here by the Romans; centuries later it was made fashionable again by the Victorians. The town, due to its central position in the heart of Wales, is also a wonderful base for your cottage holiday.

The railway brought Victorian visitors from within Wales and England to the town and today the Heart of Wales railway remains an important transport link for the area. Visitors will find the line very useful for exploring the area on foot or by cycle and for day trips to nearby towns and villages. It is worth seeing the former signal box on the southbound platform that now houses a museum and the original Victorian canopy at the station.

Llandrindod Wells has a good range of shops around Middleton Street where you can find all the provisions you might need. There are also cafes, restaurants and wine bars.

The town’s Temple Gardens have been attractively landscaped and are a lovely place to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Visiting choirs, groups and the Llandrindod Wells Silver Band use the bandstand in the park throughout the year, and it is also the venue for events in ‘Victorian Week’ held in August each year. Opposite the Gardens are the Town Hall and the Memorial Gardens, where you will find the Radnorshire Museum.

The Rock Park houses the former pump rooms that have been restored to their Victorian glory. Here, the waters can still be sampled and refreshments are served. Opposite, visitors will find a chalybeate spring that still runs from the marble stone fountain, which was installed in 1878.

    Kilsby Cottage is next to the owners country home and bed & breakfast, which was originally built as a school by the Rev JR Kilsby Jones in the 1850’s. This semi-detached holiday cottage sits on the edge of 21/2 acres of garden and private woodland, with an abundance of wildlife and spectacular views. Reduced rate wild trout fishing on upper Irfon beat is available (licence required). Evidence of the original 19th century planting and terracing is still apparent with a great diversity of mature trees and shrubs in the grounds and where the extensive views and the abundant local wildlife were a source of inspiration. Today the views remain just as grand and the wildlife is still prolific. Apart from the wonderful bird life, you might see slow-worms, common lizards, badgers, hedgehogs, polecats, wood mice and bank voles in the garden during your stay.

    Kilsby Cottage is a bird-watchers paradise with many varied resident species, as well as a number of notable summer visitors. Garden seating and strategically situated feeding stations and nesting boxes allow visitors to view many different bird species in comfort and within close proximity to the house and cottage. In addition to the garden birds, various raptor species such as red kites, buzzards and peregrine falcons are frequently seen soaring overhead.

    For walkers, lovers of outdoor pursuits or fishing, Kilsby Cottage is ideally situated for the Wye Valley, Cambrian Mountains or Brecon Beacons, or you can leave the car at the cottage and walk miles from the doorstep; explore the hills and photograph the birds or fish the River Irfon. The owners can give you comprehensive advice on chosen routes. Just over a mile from the cottage you will reach the town of Llanwrtyd Wells with several welcoming pubs and restaurants. Llanwrtyd is famous for hosting the World Bog Snorkelling Championship, the Man vs. Horse Race, the mid-Wales Beer Festival and a host of other events. The town also has its own tourist information centre, several shops and even a pub with its own micro-brewery, which has previously produced the Champion Beer of Wales.

    Cyclists will appreciate the many miles of on and off road routes and Route 8 of the National Cycle Network passes through here. Bikes can be hired locally in Llanwrtyd and Builth Wells. Horse riding and guided pony trekking, for both novices and experienced riders alike, are available from established stables in nearby Llanwrtyd Wells. For the enthusiastic golfer, there are 3 excellent 18-hole courses all within a 45-minute drive and set in breathtaking scenery.

    The National Botanic Garden of Wales is only 35 miles away, while the National Trust’s Abergwesyn Common is on the doorstep. Delightful Hay-on-Wye on the England/Wales border, famous for the annual Hay Festival and its book and antique shops is only 32 miles away. Swansea and Shrewsbury are at opposite ends of the Heart of Wales Railway Line which stops at Llanwrtyd station on the other side of town. Llandrindod Wells, an elegant Victorian Spa town is 20 miles away with its picturesque lake, and Builth Wells, a small market town where the Annual Royal Welsh Show is held can be found 13 miles away, and is where you can enjoy the excellent Wyeside Arts Centre for cinema and live performances. Pets are welcome at the site- there’s a large riverside area for dog walking and miles of footpaths nearby. There’s one ’rod’ on the river included with the rental in the fishing season. (A rod license would be required). This lodge offers a holiday with peace and relaxation - you’d be forgiven for never wanting to leave such tranquility behind.
