Knighton

Straddling the border between Wales and England, the delightful market town of Knighton is officially in the county of Powys. However part of the town is also situated in Shropshire! Boasting a rolling landscape of lush green hills, Knighton enjoys a prime countryside location for exploring both the beautiful rural Welsh Marches as well as the Shropshire Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Knighton has a rich history, evidenced by the many quaint, half-timbered houses that line the narrow, winding streets. Many visitors to the town take the opportunity to follow the Town Trail, which takes in many of the historic places of local interest.

This is a ‘Walkers are Welcome’ town with plenty of walking and cycling trails to choose from. For countryside walks, there is an official Nature Trail that starts and ends in the town, taking in some of the local inhabitants such as otters and or possibly even the odd polecat along the way (if you’re extremely lucky!). Knighton is also lucky enough to have a large section of Offa’s Dyke run by the town; the Offa’s Dyke Centre in town is full of interesting information concerning the Dyke.

There are plenty of attractions in Knighton and the surrounding area. In nearby Welshpool, the awe-inspiring Powis Castle is a magnificent sight and, coupled with the truly beautiful gardens that surround it, makes for a great day out. And for more relaxing days out hop aboard the Heart of Wales Railway which stops at Knighton; enjoy the rugged beauty of the line and explore the many picturesque towns and villages along the way.

To experience the best of both Wales and England, with miles of unspoilt countryside and a selection of historic towns on the doorstep, search for cottages in Knighton and start to plan your next holiday today.

Great Cantal Granary, converted to detached holiday accommodation, was built in early Victorian times as the grain store for the adjoining Great Cantal Mill, which itself dates back to the 17th century. The mill, which last operated in the late 1940s, had a wooden overshot mill wheel on its east wall, powered by water from the River Aran. The mill served as the ’court mill’ for the parish: local farmers brought their grain to Great Cantal, where it was stored in the...
