It may be famous for its rugby team but Llanelli is also a great base from which to explore the many scenic spots in south Carmarthenshire.

Walking and cycling are particularly popular in the area; The Millennium Coastal Path runs for 21 kilometres from close by Pembrey to Loughor, offering spectacular views of the Gower Peninsula. A cycle path also connects the town centre to the nearby National Cycle Network passing to the north and south of the town.

Pembrey Country Park, located on the outskirts of Llanelli, has a 13 kilometre long beach (Cefn Sidan), forest trails and horse riding stables. The beach is popular with both walkers and those looking for good water sports including surfing and windsurfing. The park has lots of places for relaxing picnics, and also has a dry ski slope and Wales's longest toboggan run.

Stradey Park in Llanelli is the traditional home of world famous Llanelli Scarlets rugby team, although they now play their home games at Parc y Scarlets, near Pemberton. WWT National Wetlands Centre is located approximately 1 kilometre from the town. Park Howard Museum and Llanelly House are also worth a visit.

Other attractions within easy reach of the town include Burry Port Marina (8 kilometres), Kidwelly Castle (16 kilometres), The National Botanic Garden of Wales (16 kilometres), Swansea, and other attractions within the Swansea Bay and Gower Peninsula area.

A number of festivals and events are held in the town, including the Llanelli Big Day Out, the Llanelli Christmas Carnival, the Llanelli Beer Festival, the Llanelli Ramblers Festival of Walks and the Into the Future Festival.
