Find cottages in Cardigan/Ceredigion

The Cardigan/Ceredigion region is probably best known for its superb beaches and iconic harbour ports which make this stretch of coastline such a great place for a cottage holiday in Wales. It’s where Dylan Thomas was inspired to write some of his best work and with the Cambrian Mountains as the back drop you can relax and enjoy a region full of wildlife and natural beauty.

The region’s coastline offers mile after mile of golden sandy beaches, many of which have been awarded the coveted ‘Blue Flag’ award. Discover hidden coves and smugglers caves, old fishing harbours and magnificent cliffs where you can take the coastal path which extends some 60 miles.

There are two special areas of conservation here and a rich diversity of marine wildlife including Bottle Nosed dolphins, seals and sea birds. It’s easy to hop aboard one of the many boat trips that operate from New Quay and Cardigan to fully appreciate this designated ‘Marine Heritage Coast’.

Inland a great plateau rises to form the largest part of the Cambrian Mountains with Pumlumon Fawr its highest peak at 752m (2,468 feet). This large and remote plateau is broken up by steep valleys which include some of the most beautiful mountain passes in Wales.

Further explorations of local wildlife can be found at the Welsh Wildlife Centre. This great visitor centre stands on the Telfi Marshes Nature Reserve and, thanks to its glass fronted design and elevated position, offers incredible views of the surrounding area and a variety of wildlife.

Some visitor attractions and activities of interest include the National Wool Museum were you can learn all about the region’s sheep farming heritage, or if you’re feeling adventurous try the Cardigan Bay Watersports and Sea School. Here you can enjoy dinghy sailing, yacht cruising, power boating, windsurfing and kayaking in one of the UK’s most glorious coastal locations.

The owners who live on the farm, which is set in 57 acres of rolling countryside, encourage the children to interact with the animals, and are also pleased to offer the use of a barbecue hut nicknamed the ‘Hobbit House’ by the family. Guests can hire it during their stay directly with the owners, subject to availability and for a small charge. The owner can also supply their own barbecue meat packs on request (charge payable). Within a 15-minute drive visitors can discover quaint New Quay, famous for the bottlenose dolphins that can often be seen from the harbour (boat trips available in season). The colourful, Georgian, harbour town of Aberaeron is just a bit further up the coast road, with its chic shops and plenty of restaurants. Antique shoppers and browsers will enjoy the nearby market town of Newcastle Emlyn, and Cenarth with its waterfalls is also close by and offers indoor swimming, coracle rides, fishing and paintballing. There are numerous attractions in the area, particularly suitable for children. Nearby is the Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park, which is set on a headland overlooking the nature reserve of Cardigan Island, home to thousands of sea birds. Spectacular coastline and wonderful views can be savoured from the NT-managed Penbryn Bay and a visit to NT Cilgerran Castle can also be enjoyed. At the nearby seaside resort of Aberystwyth, you can walk the promenade, take the cliff railway to the biggest Camera Obscura in the world, or catch the steam train to Devil’s Bridge and Waterfalls. Nature lovers will appreciate the abundance of walking available, from the stunning Ynyslas Nature Reserve and sand dunes to the Bwlch Nant Yr Arian Forest Visitor Centre. There is also a visitor centre where you can watch majestic red kites feeding over the nearby lake.

    Cardigan Bay is home to bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals. A dolphin survey boat trip will give you the opportunity to learn from expert volunteers about the work that goes into maintaining this Special Area of Conservation.


    The Dyfi Valley and Aberystwyth area is indeed a special place, in terms of the landscape, wildlife, the people and culture, and the area’s history and heritage. UNESCO gave the whole area Biosphere status in 2009, the purpose of which is to help in the process of protecting the environment that makes the area distinctive. Sailing plays a big part of life in the town and during the summer you are likely to catch one of the series of regattas, or maybe the tug of war competition across the water.     Not far from Llawryglyn, you can take the delightful level walk along the pedestrian and cycle track to Llanerchaeron, an 18th-Century gentry estate, now owned by the National Trust. Visit nearby New Quay, where you can take a dolphin watching boat trip, Aberystwyth with its pier, promenade and the world’s oldest working electric cliff railway, or take the steam train to Devil’s Bridge and the stunning waterfalls. Travelling inland, discover the Cambrian Mountains, steeped in myths and legends, and one of the few remote areas left in southern Britain. Although there are only a few roads across the mountains, they are some of the most scenic routes in Britain.
