Cardigan/Ceredigion

The Cardigan/Ceredigion region is probably best known for its superb beaches and iconic harbour ports which make this stretch of coastline such a great place for a cottage holiday in Wales. It’s where Dylan Thomas was inspired to write some of his best work and with the Cambrian Mountains as the back drop you can relax and enjoy a region full of wildlife and natural beauty.

The region’s coastline offers mile after mile of golden sandy beaches, many of which have been awarded the coveted ‘Blue Flag’ award. Discover hidden coves and smugglers caves, old fishing harbours and magnificent cliffs where you can take the coastal path which extends some 60 miles.

There are two special areas of conservation here and a rich diversity of marine wildlife including Bottle Nosed dolphins, seals and sea birds. It’s easy to hop aboard one of the many boat trips that operate from New Quay and Cardigan to fully appreciate this designated ‘Marine Heritage Coast’.

Inland a great plateau rises to form the largest part of the Cambrian Mountains with Pumlumon Fawr its highest peak at 752m (2,468 feet). This large and remote plateau is broken up by steep valleys which include some of the most beautiful mountain passes in Wales.

Further explorations of local wildlife can be found at the Welsh Wildlife Centre. This great visitor centre stands on the Telfi Marshes Nature Reserve and, thanks to its glass fronted design and elevated position, offers incredible views of the surrounding area and a variety of wildlife.

Some visitor attractions and activities of interest include the National Wool Museum were you can learn all about the region’s sheep farming heritage, or if you’re feeling adventurous try the Cardigan Bay Watersports and Sea School. Here you can enjoy dinghy sailing, yacht cruising, power boating, windsurfing and kayaking in one of the UK’s most glorious coastal locations.

Cardigan, home to its castle and Wales’ biggest cultural festival, the Eisteddfod, and Carmarthen (both about half an hour by car) sport excellent golf courses. Pony-trekking, fly fishing on the River Teifi and the Coracle Centre at Cenarth Falls (famous for its seasonal salmon leap) can all be found within 10 minutes’ drive. And a real taste of Wales is available virtually on the doorstep; the neighbouring farm makes delicious traditional world-famous Caws Cenarth cheese.

    This tranquil rural location is only 3 miles from delightful Newcastle Emlyn, with its good choice of shops, inns, award-winning restaurants and two delicatessens.     Penroc is a most delightful, cosy 400 year old Welsh stone cottage surrounded by beautiful countryside with magnificent views over the Cambrian Mountains.  It has been sympathetically refurbished by an interior designer to encompass the charm and character with modern comforts including furnishings to a very high standard.  The accommodation on the ground floor is a beautiful large open plan room having slate floors with scatter rugs and original beamed ceilings; there is a well-equipped kitchen/dining area, a cosy living area around an attractive gas burning stove and a spacious garden room with seating area and window seats in the bay picture windows – all of which have the added luxury of under-floor heating. The owners have thoughtfully provided plenty of DVDs to enjoy along with a good selection of books, puzzles and games for those relaxing evenings round the fire, or reading a good book in the window bay with Red Kites circling overhead – this will soon recharge your batteries!   As a mobile signal isn’t good in the cottage, a landline telephone is there in case of emergencies.  There are 2 bedrooms upstairs, one with a King size double bed with ‘Vi-Spring’ mattress which enjoys a very special feature of a large balcony for relaxing with a lazy breakfast or enjoying a meal surrounded by glorious views of the Ystwyth valley.  The second bedroom has twin beds and the beamed bathroom gives the usual comforts with heated towel rail and shaver point.  If you should require more bedrooms and a second bathroom, there is a connecting sound-proofed door to the adjoining cottage, as Penroc can either be booked independently or together with Ty Mari, where you can enjoy two double bedrooms and three twin bedrooms giving plenty of space for ten people, which would accommodate the gathering of family and friends.  Both cottages have adjacent gardens with glorious views. There is plenty of space to park cars, barbecue or just sit and take in the scenery. Unfortunately Penroc is not suitable for the disabled due to the accessibility.

    Ty Mari and Penroc are set in a stunning landscape and situated 100 meters along a rough track from the main road. There is a terrace of homes either side of the track, with Ty Mari at the end and Penroc at right angles on the headland. The garden area is limited and is shared between the cottages but there is space for cars, sunbathing and a barbeque! Penroc in particular, has glorious views.
