The Cardigan/Ceredigion region is probably best known for its superb beaches and iconic harbour ports which make this stretch of coastline such a great place for a cottage holiday in Wales. It’s where Dylan Thomas was inspired to write some of his best work and with the Cambrian Mountains as the back drop you can relax and enjoy a region full of wildlife and natural beauty.

The region’s coastline offers mile after mile of golden sandy beaches, many of which have been awarded the coveted ‘Blue Flag’ award. Discover hidden coves and smugglers caves, old fishing harbours and magnificent cliffs where you can take the coastal path which extends some 60 miles.

There are two special areas of conservation here and a rich diversity of marine wildlife including Bottle Nosed dolphins, seals and sea birds. It’s easy to hop aboard one of the many boat trips that operate from New Quay and Cardigan to fully appreciate this designated ‘Marine Heritage Coast’.

Inland a great plateau rises to form the largest part of the Cambrian Mountains with Pumlumon Fawr its highest peak at 752m (2,468 feet). This large and remote plateau is broken up by steep valleys which include some of the most beautiful mountain passes in Wales.

Further explorations of local wildlife can be found at the Welsh Wildlife Centre. This great visitor centre stands on the Telfi Marshes Nature Reserve and, thanks to its glass fronted design and elevated position, offers incredible views of the surrounding area and a variety of wildlife.

Some visitor attractions and activities of interest include the National Wool Museum were you can learn all about the region’s sheep farming heritage, or if you’re feeling adventurous try the Cardigan Bay Watersports and Sea School. The owners who live on the farm, which is set in 57 acres of rolling countryside, encourage the children to interact with the animals, and are also pleased to offer the use of a barbecue hut nicknamed the ‘Hobbit House’ by the family. Guests can hire it during their stay directly with the owners, subject to availability and for a small charge. The owner can also supply their own barbecue meat packs on request (charge payable). Within a 15-minute drive visitors can discover quaint New Quay, famous for the bottlenose dolphins that can often be seen from the harbour (boat trips available in season). The colourful, Georgian, harbour town of Aberaeron is just a bit further up the coast road, with its chic shops and plenty of restaurants. Antique shoppers and browsers will enjoy the nearby market town of Newcastle Emlyn, and Cenarth with its waterfalls is also close by and offers indoor swimming, coracle rides, fishing and paintballing. There are numerous attractions in the area, particularly suitable for children. Visit the university town of Aberystwyth, home of the National Library of Wales, take a walk on the promenade or even catch the electric cliff railway on Construction Hill. For a magical day out take the narrow gauge railway from Aberystwyth to the heart of the Pumlumon Mountains where the destination will be the world famous Devils Bridge and Rheidol Falls.
