Cardigan/Ceredigion

The Cardigan/Ceredigion region is probably best known for its superb beaches and iconic harbour ports which make this stretch of coastline such a great place for a cottage holiday in Wales. It’s where Dylan Thomas was inspired to write some of his best work and with the Cambrian Mountains as the back drop you can relax and enjoy a region full of wildlife and natural beauty.

The region’s coastline offers mile after mile of golden sandy beaches, many of which have been awarded the coveted ‘Blue Flag’ award. Discover hidden coves and smugglers caves, old fishing harbours and magnificent cliffs where you can take the coastal path which extends some 60 miles.

There are two special areas of conservation here and a rich diversity of marine wildlife including Bottle Nosed dolphins, seals and sea birds. It’s easy to hop aboard one of the many boat trips that operate from New Quay and Cardigan to fully appreciate this designated ‘Marine Heritage Coast’.

Inland a great plateau rises to form the largest part of the Cambrian Mountains with Pumlumon Fawr its highest peak at 752m (2,468 feet). This large and remote plateau is broken up by steep valleys which include some of the most beautiful mountain passes in Wales.

Further explorations of local wildlife can be found at the Welsh Wildlife Centre. This great visitor centre stands on the Telfi Marshes Nature Reserve and, thanks to its glass fronted design and elevated position, offers incredible views of the surrounding area and a variety of wildlife.

Some visitor attractions and activities of interest include the National Wool Museum were you can learn all about the region’s sheep farming heritage, or if you’re feeling adventurous try the Cardigan Bay Watersports and Sea School. Here you can enjoy dinghy sailing, yacht cruising, power boating, windsurfing and kayaking in one of the UK’s most glorious coastal locations.

    Situated just 5 minutes from Cardigan Bay and within easy reach to the whole of the beautiful Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire coastline and coastal walks, these three converted stone holiday cottages (refs OSB, OSC and OSC) are peacefully set on a farm with a selection of alpacas, donkeys, llamas, goats, ducks and chickens. The owners who live on the farm, which is set in 57 acres of rolling countryside, encourage the children to interact with the animals, and are also pleased to offer the use of a barbecue hut nicknamed the ‘Hobbit House’ by the family. Guests can hire it during their stay directly with the owners, subject to availability and for a small charge. The owner can also supply their own barbecue meat packs on request (charge payable). Within a 15-minute drive visitors can discover quaint New Quay, famous for the bottlenose dolphins that can often be seen from the harbour (boat trips available in season). The colourful, Georgian, harbour town of Aberaeron is just a bit further up the coast road, with its chic shops and plenty of restaurants. Antique shoppers and browsers will enjoy the nearby market town of Newcastle Emlyn, and Cenarth with its waterfalls is also close by and offers indoor swimming, coracle rides, fishing and paintballing. There are numerous attractions in the area, particularly suitable for children. Nearby is the Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park, which is set on a headland overlooking the nature reserve of Cardigan Island, home to thousands of sea birds. At the foot of the cliffs, a colony of Atlantic grey seals can be observed in their natural habitat. Spectacular coastline and wonderful views can be savoured from the NT-managed Penbryn Bay and a visit to NT Cilgerran Castle can also be enjoyed. Only the ruins remain of this striking 13th-century castle, whose vantage point overlooks the wonderful Teifi Gorge. Also nearby is the town of Cardigan with its restored medieval castle. The Teifi Valley Railway is another experience for the visitor, a 2 mile journey offers wonderful views of the valley and countryside. Golf and horse riding can also be found locally. Shops 1 mile.

    Step outside the grounds and choose from one of the many lanes and footpaths to explore, some take you along the unspoilt Ceredigion Coast Path and others through ancient woodland. Or make your way to the secluded National Trust cove of Cwmtydu, one mile, renowned for smugglers and pirates, the legendary Sion Cwilt was one such smuggler who used this bay in the 18th Century. The beach itself is pebbly and seal pups can often be seen here during the autumn months. Cwmtydu is nestled into the coastline, with paths offering excellent walking opportunities and connecting all the local beaches. For those who would prefer, the Cardi Bach bus service is a special summer only service, which takes travellers from Cardigan to New Quay and back twice a day between June and October. It links all the beaches in between and can transport two bikes.

    Nearby Llangrannog boasts a picturesque beach, two pubs, two cafés and chip shop, all enjoying fabulous sea views. Why not taste homemade ice cream at the cafe, there are 25 flavours to choose from! Follow the cliff path to the pretty harbour town of New Quay, four miles, watching out for dolphins, seals, peregrine and choughs en-route, all the while relishing in the spectacular unspoilt scenery. New Quay is a firm favourite for dolphin spotters, with several operators offering wildlife boat trips, along with a centre offering water sports training. Why not wine and dine at one of the pubs or restaurants, many specialising in seafood. Fans of the Welsh poet can follow the Dylan Thomas Trail around New Quay and other areas connected to the famous poet.

    A journey of just 10 miles northwards takes you to the Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron, where you can wander through interesting streets of multi-coloured houses and along its pretty quay side.
