The pretty Regency town of Aberaeron is renowned for its brightly painted Georgian houses, which overlook the attractive harbour. Located on the heritage coast of Cardigan Bay, the town is surrounded by unspoilt sandy beaches, spectacular coastal walks and has plenty of opportunities for some great wildlife watching.

Aberaeron has a rich maritime heritage and is surrounded by some lovely coastal and country walks, which pass through notable landmarks and by historic buildings. In town there are many independent shops, a craft centre and art gallery.

The headland overlooks the sandy beach of Mwnt, which is a National Trust Blue Flag beach. On the headland sits the tiny Church of the Holy Cross, which stands on the site of an ancient Celtic church dating back to around 1400.

The stone walled harbour is the perfect place to enjoy a stroll. Sample freshly caught fish at one of the restaurants, or treat the kids to some homemade honey ice cream at The Hive bar and grill. Plan your visit in July, and you can enjoy some fantastic local seafood at the Cardigan Bay seafood festival on the quayside.

There’s plenty in the town to entertain younger visitors. The family golf course includes pitch and putt and the Fantasy Farm Park is close by, with farm animals and pets to feed and both outdoor and indoor play areas. There is also a small aquarium where children can learn more about the rich marine life of Cardigan Bay.

For days out along the coast New Quay and Cardigan lay to the south and Aberystwyth is to the north.

    Not far from Llawryglyn, you can take the delightful level walk along the pedestrian and cycle track to Llanerchaeron, an 18th-Century gentry estate, now owned by the National Trust. Here you can wander around the gardens and grounds, enjoy the café, or visit the house itself, the most complete example of the early work of John Nash. Visit nearby New Quay, where you can take a dolphin watching boat trip, Aberystwyth with its pier, promenade and the world’s oldest working electric cliff railway, or take the steam train to Devil’s Bridge and the stunning waterfalls. Tregaron feels almost untouched by the 21st century and is a bastion of the Welsh language and culture. The river running through the town centre leads to Cors Caron, a national nature reserve of peat bog which is one of the most impressive wildlife areas in Wales; home to rare marsh grasses, black adders, buzzards and even the occasional red kite.
