    From your doorstep there is an abundance of footpaths, three local pubs serving food and a well-stocked local community shop. This is an all year round holiday location with both summer and winter activities; Glenshee, Scotland’s largest ski resort, just 15 miles away, Perthshire’s long distance walking trail, The Cateran Trail, passing through the village. For the more adventurous, there is hill walking on the stunning Cairngorm mountains, mountain biking, fishing, stalking on the local estates, horse riding, and golf at Blairgowrie, one of Scotland’s top golf courses or the beautiful hill course of Pitlochry. There are a variety of local events throughout the year such as The Strathardle Gathering every August (Highland Games), The Etape Caledonia Cycling Event in May, The Perthshire Open Studios and The Blairgowrie Book Festival in October, and various other local events. Blairgowrie and Pitlochry are only 12 miles away and the larger cities of Perth and Dundee are less than an hour’s drive. Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness can all be reached within one and a half to two hours.

    Cruachan is an attractive, single-storey terraced cottage situated in the pretty Highland village of Newtonmore in the heart of the Cairngorm Mountains.  This lovely wee cottage has a warm and cosy ambience, with an original fireplace in the main lounge, thick stone walls and two pretty bedrooms. There is a bright modern bathroom and well-equipped kitchen.  The garden is mainly grassed with a small stone patio area.  Newtonmore is a peaceful, friendly village, just 12 miles south of Aviemore.  Known as ‘Monarch of the Glen country’ which was filmed close by, it has a real Highland flavour and some unusual and unique attractions. There is an excellent golf course just a short walk from the back of the cottage, and an interesting Highland Folk Park (free entry) a must for all visitors.  Newtonmore Highland Games on first Saturday of August which includes the Clan MacPherson rally and Mass Pipe Bands marching into the Eilan.  Free tennis courts (rackets and balls provided in cottage).  Wildcat Trail and Wildcat Experience has been enjoyed by previous guests to Cruachan.  Hogmanay in Newtonmore draws people from all around to enhoy the Torchlight Parade and firework display and a free dram to welcome in the New Year!  There is a good selection of small local shops, cafes and restaurants, all within a few yards of the property. The surrounding area is renowned for its wealth of outdoor activities.  There is a large riding centre which offers pony trekking in the surrounding hills and mountain-bike trails, canoeing, sailing, climbing and hill-walking are all available locally.  This area is also famed for its excellent fishing, with the mighty River Spey close to hand. For walkers, the Speyside Way provides over 100 miles of way-marked trails through stunning countryside.  Aviemore, the ‘capital’ of the Cairngorm National Park, is just 10 minutes drive away offers a wealth of sporting opportunities.  Although renowned for its skiing and snowboarding, Aviemore is a village for all seasons and there is a vast array of all year round activities and outdoor pursuits. For the less energetic there is a funicular railway that runs up the side of the Cairngorm mountain range, with incredible views from the top. Visit Britain’s only herd of free-ranging reindeer at the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre or take a husky trail ride through the foothills of the mountains – a memorable and unique day out.  Cruachan provides a complimentary bottle of wine on arrival.  Tea/coffee/sugar also supplied.

Situated only 4 miles from Thurso and with miles of dramatic and scenic coastline right on the doorstep, it provides a comfortable base from which to explore this beautiful and unspoilt area of northern Scotland. Just 10 minutes’ away is one of the most fantastic beaches in the UK.  With miles of golden sand and massive sand dunes forming a backdrop, Dunnet beach is simply spectacular.  Surfing, body-boarding, sand-buggying, swimming, horse riding and wildlife watching are all local pastimes, yet this superb beach is never crowded.  Nearby Dunnet Forest has miles of lovely walks and cycling trails, with picnic areas and unusual sculptures to encounter on the way.  It is also close to the Highland Tourist trail that runs from Wick harbour in the east through to Ullapool in the west.  This trail follows a route right across the far north and west of Scotland, taking in some of the most dramatic scenery, with mountain ranges, secluded beaches and awe inspiring and ever changing coastline along the way. The nearby Castle of Mey, beautifully restored by the late Queen Mother, is a must.  This fairytale castle has a fascinating history and the gardens, grounds and views are superb. The whole area is renowned for its bird and sea life. Puffins, Great Skua, otters, seals, dolphins and whales are all seen around these coastal waters. An excellent boat trip runs from John O’ Groats to encounter the sea life close to hand and to explore this fascinating coastline from a different perspective. At Melvich, just along the coast, there is also a colony of puffins, and at Forsinard, Strath Halladale, there is an RSPB nature reserve where local rangers will take visitors to explore the bird life, flora and fauna of the area.  Historical sites and places of interest abound.  A local archaeological trail provides a tantalising glimpse into times past, with brochs, cairns and ancient sites along the way.  Take a day trip across to the Orkney Isles and explore Neolithic villages, standing stones, Scapa Flow and the amazing Italian chapel built by prisoners during the Second World War.  There are also many excellent golf courses in the region, and plenty of opportunities for fishing, coast and forest walking and cycling - taking advantage of the quiet country lanes and spectacular coastal scenery. The town of Thurso, 4 miles away, has an excellent selection of bars, cafes, shops and restaurants. Originally built by the Vikings and added to over the centuries it now offers visitors a fascinating mix of ancient and modern.  The new Caithness Horizons visitor centre is well worth a visit.  Facilities also include a swimming pool, leisure centre, cinema, boating lake, quad biking, horse riding and sailing.

    Recreational possibilities include: 21 golf courses included in the Freedom of the Fairways Passport; walking, whether gently through woods and alongside rivers and towns, or on the more challenging Southern Upland and St Cuthbert’s Ways; cycling for all abilities on quiet local roads, on the many great cycle routes nearby or try some downhill trails at Glentress Forest, Peebles (cycle store available at the properties); or have fun on their Go Ape tree top adventure course; fishing for salmon and trout on the River Tweed and its tributaries, or on stocked lochs for trout and coarse fish.
