Strachur House itself, a fine Adams style mansion, was built by General John Campbell in the 1780s. From 1957 the house was home to the illustrious Scot, Sir John Fitzroy MacLean, the soldier, diplomat and adventurer, who was said to have been the model for Ian Fleming’s hero, James Bond. The Maclean family still live in the main house. The local village shop, cafe, Inn with bar and restaurant, petrol station, village hall and tennis courts are all within easy walking distance from the cottage.

    In summer, Loch Lomond’s ancient oak woods ring with birdsong. Look out for redstarts, pied flycatchers and wood warblers. Ospreys are summer visitors to the loch and nearby Lake of Menteith. In the high country of Breadalbane, golden eagles may be seen soaring over mountain slopes richly carpeted in alpine plants. Watch out for porpoises and seals and glimpse Loch Lomond’s herd of fallow deer as they bound through the trees. Loch Lomond and Loch Earn are some of Scotland’s prime venues for sailing and water-skiing, while the rivers Balvaig and Teith are popular with canoeists. The Teith is also a great salmon river and one of many places popular with anglers. For golfing enthusiasts, the famous courses of Loch Lomond are just a short distance from the property, with an abundance of courses for all standards within easy reach.
    Walking is a popular pursuit, from gentle low-level strolls to strenuous mountain climbs. Ben Lomond, Ben Lui, Ben Ime and Ben Vorlich are among the 21 Munros (mountains over 3000 feet). The West Highland Way stretches from the edge of Glasgow to Fort William, hugging the banks of Loch Lomond and passing through the spectacular mountain scenery of Strathfillan. There are great opportunities for cycling on and off road on National Cycle Network Route 7, which passes through the National Park from Balloch to Killin. Located in a private park of 38 properties, it has direct access to the shoreline jetty (boat launching, booked through the hotel). Pleasure cruises are available from the nearby village of Balmaha. There are plenty of challenges for walkers in the area; the 92 mile West Highland Way passes alongside the loch, and runs from Milngavie to Fort William, while the route up Ben Lomond offers scope to ’Munro Baggers’. Within easy driving reach are Stirling, Inverary Castle, Loch Lomond shores and the lovely Trossachs area. The loch’s surroundings have easy walking and the water near the shore offers swimming in warm weather. Further afield, Balloch Castle Country Park covers 200 acres with nature trails, guided walks and views of the loch and the castle, built in 1808 and including a visitor’s centre. There is no shop on the site but a seasonal one is 3 miles away, and Drymen, 11 miles, has a range of small shops. Rowardennan Hotel/pub, 200 yards, offers a warm welcome and good food around the year.
