    In summer, Loch Lomond’s ancient oak woods ring with birdsong. Look out for redstarts, pied flycatchers and wood warblers. Ospreys are summer visitors to the loch and nearby Lake of Menteith. In the high country of Breadalbane, golden eagles may be seen soaring over mountain slopes richly carpeted in alpine plants. Watch out for porpoises and seals and glimpse Loch Lomond’s herd of fallow deer as they bound through the trees. Loch Lomond and Loch Earn are some of Scotland’s prime venues for sailing and water-skiing, while the rivers Balvaig and Teith are popular with canoeists. From the door of the cottage you can walk directly up into the Menteith Hills and join the Rob Roy Way with hundreds of miles of forest track easily accessible. Nick Nairn’s famous Cook School is only a few minutes drive away as is the popular Lake Hotel which serves good food at the lakeside. Within the incredibly beautiful Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park there are many lochside, lowland and hill walks just a short distance away including a Munro. Sports include golf, sailing, windsurfing, cycling and horse riding. Cruises around the loch and its many islands are available. The top of Duncryne Hill is only 20 minutes’ walk through the woods and field, and provides one of the best 360-degree views in Scotland and a spectacular panorama of Loch Lomond. A nature conservancy area is within walking distance where a large variety of wildlife may be seen including deer, ducks, geese, herons, raptors and swans. Local visits include whisky distilleries and an aquarium. The numerous attractions in Glasgow and Stirling are within 40 minutes’ driving or the former can be easily reached by train from Balloch, 3 miles away. Glasgow and Edinburgh airports are close to hand. Shop and restaurant ½ mile, pub 3 miles.
