Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye, Scotland’s second largest and amongst its most beautiful islands is situated just off the west Highland coast and conveniently connected to the mainland by the Skye Bridge or by ferry.

The island is renowned for its dramatic mountainous terrain, sea lochs and stunning coastline, pristine nature and rich cultural and historical heritage, providing one of the most exquisite cottage holiday breaks in Scotland.

Probably Skye’s most recognised mountain formations are the Cuillin range, with its jagged peaks providing a challenge to mountain climbers from around the world and the strange rock formations and pinnacles found in the Trotternish peninsula. Further geographic wonders can be found just outside Portree at The Old Man of Storr. This rocky hill offers great views of the surrounding area, not to mention an enjoyable walking location. If you fancy slightly more of a challenge then we’d recommend the Quiraing, a landslip made up of stunning natural landmarks.

Wildlife abounds here; see dolphins, porpoises and minke whales from the shore at Neist Point, visit the Ring of Bright Water interactive wildlife visitor centre with a live otter webcam or maybe hop on a boat trip to Loch Dunvegan seal colony.

Skye has a fascinating history and any visit would not be complete without seeing Dunvegan Castle which dates back to the 14th century and has been the fortress castle of clan Macleod for hundreds of years. Also of interest is the extensive estate on the Sleat peninsula, Clan Donald Skye, where you’ll find great walks through the beautiful estate, gardens, wildlife, wonderful views and a museum.

Situated by Loch Harport and with views of the Cuillins can be found the only distillery on the island. The Talisker distillery offers a fascinating insight into the heritage of Skye’s only single malt along with the opportunity to sample what is often regarded as one of Scotland’s finest whisky. Also of interest is The Aros Experience on the outskirts of Portree; here you can see exhibitions of film, music and wildlife.
