Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye, Scotland’s second largest and amongst its most beautiful islands is situated just off the west Highland coast and conveniently connected to the mainland by the Skye Bridge or by ferry.

The island is renowned for its dramatic mountainous terrain, sea lochs and stunning coastline, pristine nature and rich cultural and historical heritage, providing one of the most exquisite cottage holiday breaks in Scotland.

Probably Skye’s most recognised mountain formations are the Cuillin range, with its jagged peaks providing a challenge to mountain climbers from around the world and the strange rock formations and pinnacles found in the Trotternish peninsula. Further geographic wonders can be found just outside Portree at The Old Man of Storr. This rocky hill offers great views of the surrounding area, not to mention an enjoyable walking location. If you fancy slightly more of a challenge then we’d recommend the Quiraing, a landslip made up of stunning natural landmarks.

Wildlife abounds here; see dolphins, porpoises and minke whales from the shore at Neist Point, visit the Ring of Bright Water interactive wildlife visitor centre with a live otter webcam or maybe hop on a boat trip to Loch Dunvegan seal colony.

Skye has a fascinating history and any visit would not be complete without seeing Dunvegan Castle which dates back to the 14th century and has been the fortress castle of clan Macleod for hundreds of years. Also of interest is the extensive estate on the Sleat peninsula, Clan Donald Skye, where you’ll find great walks through the beautiful estate, gardens, wildlife, wonderful views and a museum.

Situated by Loch Harport and with views of the Cuillins can be found the only distillery on the island. The Talisker distillery offers a fascinating insight into the heritage of Skye’s only single malt along with the opportunity to sample what is often regarded as one of Scotland’s finest whisky. Also of interest is The Aros Experience on the outskirts of Portree; here you can see exhibitions of film, music and wildlife.

This thriving village, overlooking Broadford Bay, has an excellent selection of amenities. There are a number of restaurants, bars and cafes as well as a good selection of shops - from interesting individual stores to a larger supermarket. The local area is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. Dolphins, seals and otters have been spotted in the bay below the apartment. There is a small track that leads down to the shoreline below and visitors are welcome to launch canoes and other small craft here. There is also a boatyard just 1/2 mile away where sailing and motor boats can be hired. There are wonderful walks direct from the property across the hills and into the mountains. There is also an excellent golf course open to visitors just a short drive away. The Studio at Ebbtide is ideally situated for exploring the whole of this magical isle. To the north is Portree, the "capital" of Skye. Here brightly painted cottages cluster round the active harbour where some of the finest fish restaurants can be found. This bustling, atmospheric town boasts an excellent selection of interesting local shops, together with bars, restaurants and cafes. There is a superb leisure centre which is open to visitors. It has a 25 metre swimming pool, a climbing wall, gym and a number of indoor sports. Just a short trip south is Sleat, known as "the garden of Skye". Nearby Armadale Castle is well worth a visit. Seat of the Clan Donald, it boasts superb gardens and grounds set in 20,000 acres, as well as a fascinating museum. A ferry also sails from Armadale harbour across to Mallaig on the western mainland, a truly memorable day out. Surrounded by miles of breathtaking coastline, with awe inspiring mountain ranges, magical castles and historical sites, the visitor is spoilt for choice.
