Find cottages in Isle of Cumbrae

The Isle of Cumbrae lies a short distance off the Ayrshire coast in south west Scotland. It’s one of Scotland’s most accessible islands being only a short ferry ride from the coastal town of Largs. This island is a compact 2 miles wide by 4 miles long but despite its small size it has all the attributes that make a great holiday destination.

The island is a great spot for cycling and walking, it also has a lovely coastline and plenty of wildlife to enjoy. Bike hire is available locally. It’s a place of simple pleasures where you can escape the mainland to find you own island retreat staying in your own island cottage.

Millport is the main and only settlement situated in the south of the island, wrapped around a hilly bay facing the sea, with wonderful views of Bute, the Cowal Peninsula and Ailsa Craig. It’s home to Scotland’s smallest cathedral which was built in 1851 and styled in the Gothic tradition by William Butterfield.

Here you’ll also find the island’s only golf course, which was in fact designed by one of Scotland’s most eminent golf course architects, James Baird.

Learn about the islands fascinating history by visiting the Museums of the Cumbraes at Garrison House. It tells the tale of 18th century smugglers and more recently the role the island played in the Second World War. The Robertson Museum and Aquarium is a great place to understand the marine life and wildlife of the island; the island also has a sensory trail which can be taken on foot or bike and is perfect for seeing the marine and wildlife here.
