Highlands

The Highlands of Scotland epitomises all that magnificent wild and natural Britain has to offer. It’s the place to head for if you want to immerse yourself in wonderfully contrasting and every changing landscapes and tranquil locations devoid of mass tourism.

The Highlands region consists of distinctive sub-regions each with their own characteristics and unique charms, extending from Fort William and Lochaber in the south to the Northern Highlands.

Fort William is considered by many as the ‘outdoor capital’ of Scotland, this bustling town situated on the shores of Loch Linnhe has lots of places to eat and drink, interesting shops and is a great base for a wide selection of outdoor activities. The town is handy for trips into the dramatic and brooding Glen Coe and is the ‘road to the Isles’ which takes you through some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland. The town is also right next to the world famous Ben Nevis (and its glen), Scotland’s highest mountain.

To the north is the iconic Loch Ness, some 23 miles long and 700 feet deep; in fact deep enough for a monster. Take a cruise to visit Urquhart Castle a once famous Great Glen fortress; there’s a visitor centre both here and on shore at Drumnadrochit.

‘The city of the Highlands’ Inverness is today a modern thriving city on the banks of the River Ness. It has a rich historical and cultural history with plenty of attractions including a great castle. Close by is Fort George a well preserved 18th century fortification built in the terrible aftermath of the Battle of Culloden, facing out over the Moray Firth.

To the east are the Black Isle and the Moray Firth, dotted with traditional fishing villages, hidden bays and golden sandy beaches. It’s a renowned dolphin watching area where you can see them quite close up from the shore if you’re lucky.

Further north still is the awe inspiring Northern Highlands, with plenty of castles and ancient monuments, massive lochs, atmospheric mountains and glens and magnificent coastlines that stretch for miles. This is a sparsely populated region where you can really get away from everyday life and connect with nature.

Further afield, visit Inverness, the Highland capital, Loch Ness, the scenic west coast and the Isle of Skye. Kids will love the deer, highland cattle, sheep goats and pheasants – not to mention the pot-bellied pigs!
    Take a cruise on Loch Ness to hunt down the Loch Ness Monster, whilst enjoying magnificent views of Urquhart Castle. Visit Invermoriston where the Moriston Falls, complete with salmon jumping, can be viewed from the Thomas Telford Bridge. Or drive to the Isle of Skye, passing Eilean Donan – Scotland’s most photographed castle.
    The area also hosts a large number of outdoor activities including mountain biking, hillwalking, golf, fishing, horseriding, kayaking and windsurfing.
    If all the peace and quiet gets too much, Fort William and Inverness are less than an hour’s drive away.

Portmahomack is the only village on the east coast of Scotland that faces due west and has spectacular sunsets. The village has a renowned seafood restaurant as well as a café, local store and a lovely traditional links golf course which is open to visitors. The area is renowned for its archaeological sites and at the nearby Tarbat Discovery Centre is a local heritage centre and museum, with a fascinating display of Pict, Norse and medieval artefacts, as well as a gift shop. Within 15-20 minutes’ drive lies the oldest Royal Burgh of Scotland. Predominantly built in local mellow sandstone, Tain is a charming historic town and offers an excellent selection of small shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs as well as a wide variety of sporting and recreational facilities. There is excellent walking and climbing terrain nearby, both inland and along the rugged coastline – watch out for seals and otters just off shore. Several NTS properties make for good days out, including Strome Castle, and the Countryside Centre at Torridon (open May to September), the latter providing an insight into local flora, fauna and geology. From Torridon village, a scenic drive takes in the shoreline before winding past cliffs and gorges up to Diabaig, whilst 8 miles to the north, Lake Maree is dotted with Caledonian pine clad islands and lies as a scenic gem. The surrounding area also offers some of Scotland’s best deer-sighting country.
    Sandy beaches are to be found at Sand (3 miles) and Applecross Bay (7 miles); the village of Applecross itself has a P.O./local store and a friendly inn serving fresh seafood dishes. The sheltered, fertile coast around the village is idyllic: you can wander along lanes banked with wild iris and orchids, and explore beaches and rock pools on the shore. Fishing and golf are both within driving distance. Shop 7 miles.
